WOMEN’S HOCKEY COMES UP SHORT IN SEASON OPENER
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey traveled to St. Paul tonight to play Bethel University. Despite a great effort and out shooting Bethel 14 to 6, the Blugolds ended up on the losing end of the battle by a score of 2-1. After a scoreless first period, the Blugolds fell behind early in the second period when Sandra Felten of Bethel scored 2 minutes and 10 seconds into the period. Felten has really made her presence felt against the Blugolds during her career. Last year she scored six goals in two games against Coach Collins team. Bethel added to their lead at 9:54 of the second period when Felten assisted Julien Olson who put away Bethel’s second and final goal of the evening. The two goals would prove to be all Bethel needed, as the Blugolds struggled to figure out Bethel goaltender Beth Spurrier. Spurrier kept the Blugolds off the scoreboard until 13:35 of the third period. At that time, Margret Campbell (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) and Beth Dittrich (So.-Roseville, MN) assisted Maddi Hammer (Fr.-Owatonna, MN) on her first goal as a Blugold. Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring the Blugolds could muster for the night. The Blugolds made a last ditch effort to tie the game by pulling goaltender Danika Porter (Rosemount, MN/South St. Paul) with 1 minute and 20 seconds remaining in the game, however, the Blugolds failed to put the puck in the net with the extra skater on the ice. Porter made four saves on six shots for the Blugolds. Coach Collins was very pleased with his young team’s effort saying, “It was a great first game effort for a young team”. The Blugolds women’s hockey team will hope for better results tomorrow afternoon when they take the ice for the second game of the home and home series with Bethel. The puck will be dropped at 2 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Area. Game Box Score - TT -
