WOMEN’S HOCKEY COMES UP SHORT TO SUPERIOR

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team played host to nationally ranked UW-Superior tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

In a game that was played with a wide open feel, the Blugolds found themselves up 2-1 early in the second period. However, they were unable to hold on to that lead as the Yellow Jackets scored three unanswered goals in the final 35 minutes of the game to claim their second victory against the Blugolds this season.

The Blugolds came out and controlled play in the Superior zone early in the first period, but the Yellow Jackets weathered the storm and took a 1-0 lead at 9:27 of the period. At that point Gina Baranzelli beat Lindsay Savat (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN/Thomas Jefferson) with a quick wrist shot from the left circle. Down 1-0, the Blugolds wasted no time evening up the score. Kristin Faber (Fr.-Austin, MN) tied it up for the Blugolds by slamming in her own rebound only one minute and 18 seconds later.

The score remained tied at one when the Blugolds went on the power play early in the second period. The Blugolds took advantage of the power play as Michelle Stohr (So.-South St. Paul, MN) beat Melissa Kunzelman by ringing one off the pipe. The Blugolds lead did not last long as the Yellow Jackets’ Jamie McClintock scored a shorthanded goal on a break away less than four minutes later. With the game tied at two, Baranzelli tallied her second goal of the night to put the Yellow Jackets up 3-2 at 9:46 of the second.

Not to be outdone by her teammate, McClintock lit the lamp for a second time as well at the 7:33 mark of the third. The Blugolds struggled to close the gap for the rest of the period and were forced to pull their goalie with one minute and 42 seconds remaining in the game. The Blugolds were on the power play at that time and had a 6-4 skater advantage, but were unable to cash in.

Savat started her third consecutive game for the Blugolds. She made turned away 22 of 26 Yellow Jacket shots in the losing effort and fell to 5-4-0 on the season.

The Bluogolds will hope to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Yellow Jackets when they faceoff tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center.
