THIRD PERIOD GOAL SINKS WOMEN’S HOCKEY

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – After taking the early lead, the UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team let one slip away against Northern Collegiate Hockey Association foe Lake Forest.

The Blugolds fell by a score of 3-2 Friday night. The loss drops the Blugolds to 10-10-0 overall and 7-6-0 in conference play. Despite the loss, the Blugolds remain in third place in the conference standings just one point ahead of Lake Forest.

The Blugolds started the scoring this evening when Kristin Faber (Fr.-Austin, MN) lit the lamp while the Blugolds were shorthanded at 7:16 of the first period. The goal was Faber’s ninth of season. Four of Faber’s nine goals this year have come shorthanded. The lead Faber gave the Blugolds did not last long though as Lake Forest tied the game just over a minute later. The teams went into the intermission tied at one.

In the second period, Lake Forest took the 2-1 lead at the 13:42 mark. However, the Blugolds responded before the period ended. Christine Knop (Fr.-Coon Rapids, MN) tied it up with just over 3 minutes left in the second period. Knop’s game tying goal was setup by teammates Shannon Nelson (Fr.-Blaine, MN) and Kelli Johnson (Fr.-Farmington, MN).

The two teams entered the third period deadlocked at two. Lake Forest took the lead just bit over halfway through the period when Laura Wilson beat Lindsay Savat (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN/Thomas Jefferson) on the power play. The Blugolds made a last ditch effort to tie the game as they pulled Savat with about two minutes remaining.

Even though she ended up with the loss, Savat had a solid showing stopping 22 Lake Forest shots. Savat is now 4-3-0 on the season with a .887 save percentage.

The Blugolds will hope to end a two game losing streak when these same two teams meet again in tomorrow’s matinee matchup. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m.
