WOMEN'S HOCKEY DROPS FINAL '05 GAME TO UW-SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - A trio of Yellowjacket goals in the first period was too much for the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team to handle today as Eau Claire lost 5-1 to UW-Superior in Wessman Arena.

All but two of the entire game's goals came between the 10 and 15 minute marks of the first period. Scoring started 10:29 into the opening period on an even-sided strike for Superior. At the 12-minute mark Superior notched a power-play score. Eau Claire made it a one-goal game again with an evenhanded Amanda Schultz (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) shot at 13:44. No assists were recorded. The Yellowjackets retook their two-score lead at 14:58, this one on an even-sided goal.

In the second, a power-play strike at 1:52 and an evenhanded tally at 13:28 for Superior made for today's final.

The Blugolds allowed 31 shots on goal while Jill Arendt (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) kept 26 of them from finding the back of the net. Eau Claire only managed 18 such shots of its own and one made it through. Eau Claire did have four advantages but converted none while Superior went two for six.

Including today's and yesterday's losses, the Blugolds are 2-21 against the Yellowjacket foes all-time. This particular result drops Eau Claire to 2-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 against Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opponents. Superior stands on top of the NCHA with a 4-1-1 showing against other NCHA teams. The Yellowjackets are now 8-1-1 on the season.

The next game for the Blugolds is in the new year when they host St. Thomas on January 4th. This first 2006 game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
