UW-SUPERIOR LIVES UP TO NAME AGAINST WOMEN'S HOCKEY

SUPERIOR - For the first seven games of the season the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team did not go to overtime once. Tonight's 3-2 loss to UW-Superior marks the third extra period game in a row for the team and its second extra play loss.

The Yellowjackets got off to an early lead with two evenhanded goals in the first. They came at 2:42 and 17:13. The Blugolds were outshot 13-5 in the opening period.

Eau Claire fought back in the second at the 10:48 mark. Karen Hebert (Jr.-Lakeville, MN/Holy Angels) made the even-handed score while Amanda Schultz (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) was in on the assist.

Down 2-1 in the third, Lauren Havard (Fr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) made a power-play goal to tie it up. Martina Korinek (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN) made the assist on the 5:34 score.

The overtime period lasted three minutes exactly and ended on an even-sided Yellowjacket game-ender. The opponents had four shots on goal in extra play while the Blugolds put up none.

Jill Arendt (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) made 28 saves on the 31 Superior shots. Her counterpart dealt with 17 shots from the Blugolds with two getting past her.

Eau Claire had five advantages and converted once. The Blugolds only allowed two Superior power-play opportunities and they were not allowed a score on either.

The Blugolds are now 2-7-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. The Yellowjackets are 7-1-1 and 3-1-1 in each respective category.

Tomorrow is the last 2005 game for Eau Claire. The team faces Superior again at 2:00 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
