WOMEN'S HOCKEY LOSES AFTER CRIPPLING THIRD PERIOD

STEVENS POINT - For 43 minutes and 17 seconds, this Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest remained deadlocked, but UW-Stevens Point managed two third period goals for a 2-0 shutout over the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team.

The Blugolds are 0-8-4 in the NCHA and 6-12-4 in the whole season. The respective marks for the Pointers, who are ranked sixth in the USCHO.com Division III poll, stand at 7-1-2 and 13-4-3. They are tied for first with UW-Superior in the NCHA standings.

The first two periods only saw eight total shots on goal from Eau Claire and eight each period from the Pointer offense.

Both crushing third period goals came off of Pointer power-plays. Each team had seven on the evening. The first score came at the 3:17 mark and the final one occurred 10:14 into the third.

Jill Arendt (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) turned away 27 shots tonight. Eau Claire only managed 13 shots on goal against the 29 of the opponents.

This game had several interesting notes. It was the 100th career win for Pointer coach Brian Idalski, who is in his fifth year. Also, junior goalie Amy Statz tied the Stevens Point record of 12 career shutouts.

The two teams battle it out tomorrow when Stevens Point comes to Hobbs Ice Center for the 7:00 p.m. game. It is also the last home game of the year for the Blugolds.
