WOMEN'S HOCKEY BEATS ST. BEN'S FOR THIRD IN ROW

ST. JOSEPH, MN - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team made it three in a row with a 5-3 triumph over the College of St. Benedict at Torrey Arena here Wednesday night.

The non-conference triumph pushed the Blugolds' season record to 5-9-1 while St. Ben's dropped to 2-7-2.

Five different players scored goals for Coach Mike Collins' Blugolds with two goals coming on power plays.

Both teams scored in every period with St. Ben's starting the offensive barrage at the 2:11 mark of the first period. The Blugolds did not pull even until senior Laura Brackey (Oakdale, MN/Tartan) found the back of the net with 2:05 left in the opening period for just her second goal of the season.

Team scoring leader Lauren Havard (Fr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) put the Blugolds ahead 2-1 on a power play midway through the period but St. Ben's countered less than three minutes later, also with a player advantage, to tie the score.

The Blugolds were able to regain the lead at the 14:09 mark of the period when Martina Korinek (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN) scored off a pass from Allie Campbell (Jr.-Plymouth, MN) who garnered her second assist of the game. For Korinek, it was her seventh goal of the season.

The Blugolds broke the game open by scoring the first two goals of the third period at the 5:23 and 9:41 marks for a 5-2 lead. Those were notched by Laura Suppes (Jr.-Roseville, MN) and Amanda Schultz (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH). For Schultz, it was her fifth goal in the last five games. She played the first game of the season, then missed eight consecutive starts with an injury. Suppes, who missed the first seven games of the season, scored her second goal in the last three outings.

The Blugolds outshot St. Ben's by a 33-17 margin and sophomore goalie Heather Prochaska (Madison/East) made 14 saves while picking up her fourth win in five starts including three straight since sophomore Jill Arendt (Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) was knocked out of the lineup with an injury.

The Blugolds are now 2-0 in the all-time series with St. Ben's which also included a 5-1 decision last season.

The Blugolds will get a 10-day break until they return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association competition with a road contest against UW-Stevens Point January 21.
