THIRD PERIOD COMEBACK LIFTS WOMEN'S HOCKEY OVER ST. OLAF
EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team scored two goals in the final nine minutes to defeat St. Olaf 4-3 and win their first game of the year here today at Hobbs Ice Center.
The Blugolds scored first when Kristi Hawkinson (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) scored off an Amanda Schultz (So.-Stevens Point/SPASH) pass at the 9:11 mark of the first period.
The Oles replied with two unanswered goals at the 17:38 and 18:05 marks of the period. Schultz answered back 43 seconds later off a Laura Suppes (Fr.-Falcon Heights, MN) pass to tie the game at two.
The Oles took a 3-2 advantage into the third period before Suppes tied the game at three off passes from Schultz and Megan Oswall (Jr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) at the 11:58 mark of the third period.
The Blugolds took the lead for good less than two minutes later when Crystal Wasem (So.-Chaska, MN) took a Martina Korinek (Fr.-White Bear Lake, MN) pass to score on the power play to give Eau Claire a 4-3 lead.
Goalie Tara Berlute (Jr.-Bloomington, MN/Holy Angels) made 22 saves off 25 shots. The Blugolds committed five penalties for 10 penalty minutes with the Oles committing four penalties for eight minutes.
Eau Claire will be in action Friday when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to take on Bethel College. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
