WOMEN’S GOLF FINDS ITSELF IN UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s golf team is tied for fourth place with UW-Superior after day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (WIAC) at the Windwood Golf Club.

The Blugolds shot 359 as a team and are only one stroke behind third place UW-Platteville which shot 358. However, things are a bit more spread-out at the top where UW-Oshkosh shot a 341 and UW-Stevens Point shot a 327. The seven team pack is rounded out by UW-Whitewater 364 and UW-Stout 368.

Last year at this time the Blugolds were on top of the leader board with a 13 stroke lead, and they were well on their way to their third consecutive WIAC title.

Meghan Sobotta (Sr.-Arcadia, WI) led the Blugold golfers with a score of 80 (+8). Sobotta’s score was good enough to place her in a tie for second place overall. Torie Ives (So.-Osseo, WI/Osseo-Fairchild) also finished in the top ten, tied for ninth, she ended the day with a score of 85 (+13). Last year on the opening day Ives shot a 73, which was the second best single day score in the history of the WIAC Championships. Other Blugold scores were Brianna Obermueller (So- River Falls, WI) 95 (+23), Katie Swift (Fr.-Onalaska, WI) 99 (+27), and Sarah Hansen (Sr.-Bangor, WI) 103 (+31).

The team will resume action tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Windwood Golf Club.
