WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING SHOWCASE

EAU CLAIRE– The UW- Eau Claire women’s basketball team will host the annual four-team Thanksgiving Showcase on Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24.

The first game of the Showcase will be with University of Chicago and Edgewood College playing at 6 p.m. The Blugolds will follow at 8 p.m. with North Park University. The winners of the two games will face each other at 8 p.m. in Saturday’s championship game. The losing teams will face off at 6 p.m. on Saturday in a consolation game. The Blugolds have won the last three years and Morningside won back in 2003.

The Blugolds are currently 2-0, with winning two games on the road. Their first contest was against ninth-ranked Luther. The Blugolds won the game 62-53. On Tuesday, November 20, the Blugold women traveled to St. Norbert. They came back from a nine point deficit to win 61-57. The Blugolds have been led by Michelle Burns (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/North), who is averaging 15.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, WI) is averaging 12.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Brittanni Hakanson (Jr.-Wheeler, WI/Boyceville) leads the Blugolds in rebounding, averaging 5.5 per game. Leading the team with six assists are Amanda Zenner (Sr.-Medford, WI) and Heather Witt (Jr-Kendall, WI/Royall). Witt also leads the team with six steals.

Eau Claire’s first opponent is North Park University. North Park is 0-2 with losses coming from Edgewood College and Concordia University-Wisconsin. They are returning 10 letterwinners and three starters for last year’s squad. Against Concordia, North Park was led by LaRae Kostreva and Andrea Perez. Each had 13 points. The Vikings lost to Concordia 82-42. Kostreva led North Park again against Edgewood with 16 points.

Edgewood College and University of Chicago are the other teams in the tournament. Edgewood is 1-1 after competing in the St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament. They lost to St. Norbert 59-44. Megan Scheele had a double-double scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Edgewood then defeated North Park University 77-43. Megan Scheele led the Eagles again with 20 points. Kacy Sporle added 14 and Janelle Gosh had 11 points. Edgewood took third place in the St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament.

The University of Chicago is 2-0 from winning their Midwest Classic. They defeated Concordia (Minn.) 72-63. The Maroons were led by Molly Hackney, who had 12 points. Nofi Mojidi added 10 points. The team then beat Barush 77-67. Molly Hackney had a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Nofi Mojidi had 17 points and three steals. Lori Tanaka scored 11 points, with two threes.

The action gets underway on Friday, November 23 at 6 p.m. with University of Chicago and Edgewood College. The Blugolds follow with North Park University at approximately 8 p.m. All games will take place at Zorn Arena.
