VOLLEYBALL TAKES TWO AT PLATTEVILLE TOURNEY

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. –The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team won 3-1 over Cornell College (IA) and 3-0 over Lake Forest College (IL) to go 2-0 in day one of the UW-Platteville Tournament.

The games went 25-30, 30-27, 30-22, and 30-20 in the first match as Eau Claire hit below .100 in the first pair of games before tallying .389 and .345 marks in the final two.

Lissa Martinez (Sr.-Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) had 18 kills for Eau Claire and Abby Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) followed with 14. Emily Haese (Jr.-Mishicot) set them up with 60 total assists. Freiborg also had six aces.

On defense, Freiborg totaled 21 digs and Haese had 18. Heather Harnell (Sr.-Minnetonka, MN) put up 17 and Cary Rasmussen (So.-Sparta) contributed 15.

The second match of the day was a sweep, but Lake Forest put up a fight in the first two games. The scores were 30-27, 30-27, and 30-17.

Kristen Moore (Jr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) was the kills leader at 13, though Martinez and Katie Fox (Jr.-Chippewa Falls/Chi-Hi) both had 11. Haese’s 43 assists kept the attack going while Lindsey Smith (So.-Maple Lake, MN) made 34 digs to start some Blugold points.

The 11-5 Blugolds are tied with UW-Platteville atop the tourney standings at 2-0. Platteville faces Lake Forest tomorrow before taking on Eau Claire in what could decide the tourney champion.

The Blugolds’ first match is against UW-Stout at noon and the second against Platteville is at 2 p.m.
