SOCCER MATCHES SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS IN A SEASON

ST. PAUL – The sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire soccer team tied a school record for wins in a season today with its 17th win as it defeated the University of St. Thomas (MN) 3-0.

The Blugolds have a record of 17-2 overall. The Blugolds went 17-4-1 back in the 2002 season. The loss drops the Tommies to an overall record of 7-7-2.

The Blugolds got things rolling early as Becky Westbrock (Sr.-Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) scored 5:32 into the match, putting the ball over the goalkeeper to make the score 1-0. It was her first goal of the season. Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) assisted on the goal.

The score remained that way until the 34th minute when Liz Kooistra (So.-Lakeville, MN) put one past the goalkeeper after a scramble in front of the net to make the score 2-0. Cassie Peeters (So.-Little Chute, WI) had the assist.

The Blugolds got their final score of the game in the 64th minute when Amy Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) scored to give the Blugolds a 3-0 lead. Becky Westbrock had the assist. The score would not change and the Blugolds pitched its 12th shutout victory of the season, which matches the total of the 1998 season.

Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) had two saves in the win. The Blugolds out-shot the Tommies 16-6 in the match. The Blugolds are now 4-5-1 all-time against St. Thomas and have won the two last matches by 3-0 scores.

The Blugolds will have their final regular season match next Saturday when they host the College of St. Scholastica (MN) for Senior Day at the Bollinger Fields. The action gets underway at 2 p.m.
