SOCCER SHUTS DOWN CORTLAND FOR TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP
ROCHESTER, NY - With a 1-0 victory, the UW-Eau Claire soccer team claimed the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament Championship and a second straight shutout to begin the season. The defense that showed up in yesterday's 2-0 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology was present again today. SUNY Cortland, which defeated the College of Wooster to advance to the championship, was held to four shots the entire game with a lone shot on goal, making for just one Liz Weirick (Jr.-Kenosha/Tremper) save on the day. The Blugolds put up 10 shots and five shots on goal. The game was scoreless until midway through the second half when senior Maria Iaizzo (White Bear Lake, MN) scored her second goal of the tournament at the 65:10 mark. She took a feed from Kristi Olson (So.-Minnetonka, MN) and launched the ball past a diving goalie and just inside the left post to score what would be the difference-maker. The Blugolds, who are ranked 19th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas preseason poll and 24th in the D3Kicks.com Top 25 poll, led all teams with three members selected to the All-Tournament Team. The defensive skills of Allison Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) and Weirick notched a couple of selections while Iaizzo was noted for her offensive prowess. The team heads to Illinois next where they will face Millikin University on Friday and Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday. Eau Claire-SUNY Cortland Box Score - PH -
