MEN'S TRACK IN FIFTH AFTER FIRST DAY AT CHAMPIONSHIPS

OSHKOSH - The UW-Eau Claire men's track team finds itself in fifth out of eight teams at the end of day one for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championships, hosted by UW-Oshkosh.

Defending champs UW-La Crosse is on top with 72. UW-Whitewater is second with 41 while UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh trail them at 29. Eau Claire's 22 are good for fifth.

The relay squad won today's only championship for the team. Ben Brossard (So.-Green Bay/Southwest), Wes Fischer (Fr.-Rosemount, MN), Joey Veriga (Jr.-Cudahy), and Adam Wolfe (So.-Marshfield) took first with a season-best 7:44.45 time in the 4x800-meter relay. The next best team was over three seconds behind them at 7:47.73.

Drew Bingner (Fr.-Fort Atkinson) took fifth in the javelin throw. His mark was 48.77 meters (160'). The winning toss went 56.53 meters (185'5") for Platteville's Tim Jankowski.

Nick Aliota (Jr.-Brookfield/Central) qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles after today's season-best 15.28 time, which grabbed him fifth in the prelims. He came in with the sixth best mark in the conference for this event.

The Blugolds look to grab points and climb the standings tomorrow in the last day of the WIAC Outdoor Championships.
