ROEMHILD, EIGENFELD, BINGNER TAKE TRACK FIRSTS
EAU CLAIRE - Three UW-Eau Claire field athletes were individual winners in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open track meet held on Simpson Field Saturday. Dan Roemhild (So.-Fall Creek) won the long jump with a leap of 21' 7.5", Eric Eigenfeld (Jr.-DeForest) captured the triple jump with a 43' 2.5" effort and Drew Bingner (Fr.-Ft. Atkinson) hurled the javelin 157' 8" to win that event. The non-scored meet included 10 colleges but the top performances came from the host Blugolds, UM-Duluth and the University of Minnesota. Other schools with participants were UW-River Falls, UW-Stout, Bethel, UW-Superior, St. Scholastica, Northern Iowa and St. Mary's. The Blugolds were the strongest in the field events with four of the top seven places in the hammer, three of the top six in the triple jump and two of the top six in both the long jump and javelin. In the running events, the Blugolds took four of the top eight spots in the 800 and three of the top eight in the steeplechase. In addition to winning the javelin, Bingner also placed sixth in the hammer throw. Teammate Al Oleson (Jr.-Wausau/West) placed third in a strong field in the hammer with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 169' 1". Among the second place finishers for the Blugolds were Kevin Hall (Fr.-Green Bay/Preble) in the 10,000-meter run, Nick Aliota (Jr.-Brookfield/Central) in the 110-meter hurdles and Grant Haugan (Fr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) in the triple jump. The Blugold 1600-meter relay team was also second. Aliota also grabbed a third in the 200-meter dash while Adam Wolfe (So.-Marshfield) was third in the 800 and Mark Sanders (Fr.-Hammond/St. Croix Central) was third in the 10K.
