MEN'S TRACK TAKES CLOSE SECOND AT VIKING OLYMPICS

ROCK ISLAND, IL - The UW-Eau Claire men's track team finished second by half a point today to the home team at Augustana College's Viking Olympics.

Augustana's score of 252 just edged out Eau Claire's 251.5. Wartburg College took third with 158 points while Olivet Nazarene University's 117.5 score managed fourth. St. Ambrose University rounded out the top five schools at 82. There were a total of 9 competing teams.

The event saw three Eau Claire individual champions and one relay team take first. Frankie Adams (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) ran an 11.42 100-meter dash, Eric Eigenfeld (Jr.-DeForest) went 13.11 meters (43'1/4") in the triple jump, and Drew Bingner (Fr.-Fort Atkinson) compiled a distance of 52.92 meters (173'7") in the javelin throw. The 4x800-meter relay squad of Wes Fischer (Fr.-Rosemount, MN), Joey Veriga (Jr.-Cudahy), Rob Wilcox (Fr.-Green Bay/Southwest) and Adam Wolfe (So.-Marshfield) took first in 8:00.95.

Several more Blugolds took the runner-up spot in their respective events. Andrew Kling (So.-Marshfield) had a 1.85 meter (6'3/4") leap in the high jump for his spot. Also in the field events, Eau Claire's Al Oleson (Jr.-Wausau/West) had second-place tosses in the hammer throw at 48.89 meters (160'4") and in the shot put at 14.36 meters (47'11/2").

As for the track side, Veriga was runner-up in the 800-meter run with a 2:00.38 race.

For the 1600-meter sprint relay squad of Don Ehasz (So.-Mauston), Grant Haugan (Fr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon), Evan Koger (Fr.-Eau Claire/Memorial), and Wolfe, a time of 3:38.40 brought second.

This was the first outdoor event for the team this year. The Blugolds had finished sixth of nine at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships prior to this outdoor season.

The next Eau Claire event is next Saturday in Stevens Point. The Coldman Invite begins at 11:00 a.m.
