KING TAKES NINTH AT NATIONALS
DECATUR, Ill. - Chris King (Jr.-Chippewa Falls) earned ninth place in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships to gain the first points for either the men's or women's UW-Eau Claire track and field team.
King threw 174-10 feet (53.29 meters) in the hammer throw to take finish ninth in the event. UW-Whitewater's Jeremy Wendt took first setting the NCAA Championships and Lindsay Stadium record with a throw of 215-5 (65.66 meters).
John Schuna (Jr.-Hudson) competed in the discus taking third in his flight with a throw of 160-9 feet (48.99 meters) but it wasn't enough to advance to the finals. UW-La Crosse's Mike Turgeon took first with a Division III-best throw of 179-4 feet (54.67 meters).
Melissa Wright (Sr.-Appleton/Kimberly) took 14th in the steeplechase with a time of 11:11.13. Wright's time bettered the old Lindsay Stadium time but La Crosse's set the NCAA Championship record with a time of 10:26.56.
Laura Tamm (Sr.-Brillion) fell in the preliminaries of the discus throw after a toss of 133-7 feet (40.72 meters). Gustavus Adolphus' Kristin Peterson took first in setting the Lindsay Stadium record with a throw of 159-6 feet (48.62 meters).
Jen Stafslien (Jr.-Onalaska/West Salem) advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with her best time of the season at 14.60 seconds. Stafslien's time was fifth best on the day.
