MEN’S TENNIS TAKES TWO MORE ON SPRING BREAK TRIP
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team picked up two more victories on its spring break trip, defeating Nazareth College (N.Y.) 9-0 in its first meet and Greenville College (Ill.) 9-0 later in the day. The Blugolds have not yet dropped a meet on their trip to South Carolina. They played one meet Sunday and one Monday and won by scores of 7-2 and 8-1, respectively. Eau Claire now holds a 15-3 overall record. Only one match was not won in straight sets today. Playing at No. 1 singles, Steve Lantz (Jr.-Rochester, MN/Century) used a super-tiebreaker to defeat Nazareth College’s Jon Weaver 3-6, 6-3, 10-2. Later in the day, however, he only gave up three points to Nate Wiedman of Greenville College to win 6-2, 6-1. Kevin Fawcett (So.-Madison, Wis./Verona) and Erik Brandner (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) also played in close matches against Nazareth College at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. They ended up winning 7-5, 6-1 and 7-6, 6-1, respectively. The rest of the day’s singles matches were decided by larger margins. Facing Greenville College, the Blugolds only gave up a total of 14 points in all six singles matches. Brett Burleigh (Fr.-Verona, Wis.) and [Eric Wollum (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) won in straight sets, not giving up a point, at No. 5 and No. 6. On the doubles side, Lantz and Phil Loprinzi (So.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) won both of their matches today, playing in the No. 1 spot. They defeated Narareth’s pair of Jon Weaver and Terrance Nichols 8-4 and followed that with an 8-1 victory over Greenville’s Nate Weidman and Garrett Stephens. Lars Olson (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) and Fawcett won at No. 2 doubles 8-1 over Nazareth, while C.J. Rose (Sr.-Lakeville, MN/Apple Valley) and Aaron Johnson (Fr.-Elk River, Minn.) won later in the day over Greenville 8-1 in the same spot. At No. 3, Wollum and Chris Thornton (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) picked up an 8-1 win over Nazareth and Mike Olson (Fr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and Brett Gressick (Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) defeated Greenville College’s Brent Wiedman and Pat Heller 8-3 later. Eau Claire will play again tomorrow at 8 a.m., taking on Tiffin University, and will finish up its trip with a meet against Grove City College at 8 a.m. Thursday.
