MEN’S TENNIS GOES 2-1 OVER THE WEEKEND

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – In three dual meets this weekend, the UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team took two and dropped one to Division II St. Cloud State at the Gold’s Gym Tennis Courts in St. Cloud.

On Friday the Blugolds first took on St. Cloud State and played tough, but eventually lost 6-3. Eau Claire then got back on track later in the evening, winning 7-2 over Concordia-Moorhead. Saturday morning, the Blugolds were back in action, taking on St. Scholastica. The Blugolds defeated the Saints 8-1.

Eau Claire improves to 3-1 on the season. Concordia dropped to 1-1 after the loss to the Blugolds. The Cobbers’ first win of the season came on a 9-0 victory over Northwestern (Minn.), a team the Blugolds also beat 9-0 in their season opening meet this week.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Phil Loprinzi (So.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and Steve Lantz (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Century) and the No. 3 team of C.J. Rose (Sr.-Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) and Eric Wollum (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) both won two out of three matches, falling only to St. Cloud State. Loprinzi and Lantz won 8-4 on Friday night and 8-2 on Saturday. Rose and Wollum won 8-6 on Friday and 8-2 on Saturday.

In singles, Lars Olson (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) and Erik Brandner (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) were the only Blugolds to go home with three victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively. Olson used a super-tiebreaker to defeat St. Cloud’s Kevin Bauleke 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 and did not give up a point to his Concordia-Moorhead opponent, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 on Friday. On Saturday, Olson beat St. Scholastica’s Will Ruckel in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.Brandner won on Friday 6-3, 6-4 against St. Cloud and 6-2, 6-1 against his Concordia opponent. On Saturday he allowed only three points, winning 6-0, 6-3.

The men’s tennis team will be back at home next weekend, hosting Ripon College and Macalester College on Sunday. The Blugolds will take on Ripon at 8:30 a.m. and Macalester at 4 p.m.
