MEN’S TENNIS WINS BIG OVER WINONA STATE

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team won its first home meet of the 2007 season in resounding fashion defeating Division II Winona State (MN) 8-1 here tonight at the Olson Addition.

With the win the Blugolds improve to 2-3 on the season. The Warriors lose their first dual match of the season and even their record at 1-1.

The Blugolds won all but one singles matches against the Warriors winning each match in straight sets. Tim Eisele (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN) opened up the match with a strong 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kyle Savelkoul at No. 1 singles. Steve Lantz (So.-Rochester, MN/Century) continued the roll with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ryan Zilka at No. 2 singles. After losing the No. 3 singles match Erik Brandner (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) won his match at No. 4 singles downing Zach Williams 6-1, 6-3. Phil Loprinzi (Fr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) made it two consecutive Blugold wins with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Scott Hessian at No. 5 singles. Brett Gressick (Jr.-De Pere) closed out the Blugold dominance in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Eizequiel Santamaria.

In doubles action Eau Claire swept all three matches from Winona State led by the team of Eisele/Lantz defeating Zilka/Savelkoul at No. 1 doubles 8-3. The duo of Aaron Nordenskjold (Sr.-Red Wing, MN) and Loprinzi won their match at No. 2 doubles over Malecha/Lentz 8-2 and at No. 3 doubles Jeff Peterson (Sr.-Edina, MN) and C.J Rose (Jr.-Lakeville, MN/Apple Valley) defeated Williams/Hessian 9-7.

The Blugolds return to the road next weekend as they travel to St. Peter, Minnesota to take on Gustavus Adolphus. Action is slated to start at 6:30 P.M.
