SEVERSON CLAIMS 11TH IN RACE ONE AT NATIONALS

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - UW-Eau Claire swimmer Cori Severson (Sr.-Brainerd, MN) is halfway through her NCAA Division III Nationals events after taking 11th in the 50-yard freestyle today.

Severson came into the race by qualifying with a 24.27 race in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships. There were 44 other swimmers in the event today.

Severson had to get one of the top 16 times in preliminaries to move on to the finals. The top eight would go the championship heat while swimmers 9 through 16 would move on to the consolation heat. She swam a 24.50 prelim race to place 14th out of all qualifiers and move on to finals. The No. 8 swimmer had a 24.20 time.

For the second year in a row, Severson found herself in the consolation finals of this event. Today she swam a 24.69 race for 11th, third best for her heat. The winner of her final heat had a 24.46 race while Calvin College's Becky Weima took home the top prize with a 23.30 final.

Last year Severson took 10th in the finals on a 24.17 swim. To get there she swam 24.44 races twice, once in prelims and once in a swim-off.

Severson currently holds the WIAC record in the 100-yard freestyle, her second and final event, with 51.74. The prelims and finals for the 100-yard freestyle take place Saturday.
