SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS IN THIRD AT WIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - After the first day of the three-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)Championships, which UW-River Falls is hosting, the UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams find themselves in third out of six teams.

The men have 199 points behind UW-Stevens Point's 273 and UW-La Crosse's 224. They are ahead of UW-Whitewater's 100, UW-Oshkosh's 73 and finally the host team's 56.

The women have a 146 total for their third place standing. Stevens Point has 265 points and La Crosse holds a 206.5 score. Whitewater's 82.5, Oshkosh's 76 and River Falls' 69 follow behind the Blugolds.

Many men garnered over 10 points for the team. In the 500-yard freestyle, Patrick Finley (Fr.-Waunakee) gained 15 points with a fourth place finish while Brian Jordan (So.-Madison/West) finished right behind him for 14 points. Their times were 4:50.05 and 4:51.46, respectively. In the 200-yard individual medley, Nick Peterson (Jr.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul) took 11 points with a 2:02.90 eight place finish. Scott Heatwole (Sr.-Port Washington) took second in the 1-meter dive with a 440.10 score for 17 points. Adam Von Feldt (Sr.-Lancaster) got 16 points for the Blugolds with a 395.45 third place finish while Don Vollmer (Fr.-Superior) and his 392.70 total gained fourth place and 15 points.

The relay teams gained many points with good finishes. The relay teams did so in the 200-yard freestyle on a fourth place finish in 1:29.10 for 30 points. The third place 400-yard medley team swam a 3:37.63 race for a contribution of 32 points.

Several women helped acquire the 146 mark with point gains over 10. Annie Gorman (Sr.-Menomonie) and Emily Viau (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) excelled in the 500-yard freestyle with races of 5:13.31 and 5:14.39. Gorman finished fourth for 15 points while Viau ended up in sixth for 13. Emily Diehl (So.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) and her fifth place 2:14.42 200-yard individual medley race took 14 points. Cori Severson (Sr.-Brainerd, MN) swam into second in the 50-yard freestyle on a 24.31 display to add 17 to the Eau Claire total. The sixth place 3-meter 319.65 dive of Chelsea Moore (Fr.-Plymouth, MN/St. Louis Park) added 13 more points.

The relay team in 200-yard freestyle took third in 1:40.08 to get 32 points. It added another 32 with a third place finish in the 400-yard medley race on a 4:09.05 effort.

Day two begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the U of M Aquatic Center.
