MEN’S HOCKEY DROPS OVERTIME GAME

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – After pushing UW-Superior to an extra period tonight, the UW-Eau Claire men’s hockey team fell in overtime by a 2-1 score.

Eau Claire is now 5-7-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and 9-14-0 overall. Superior improves to 6-4-2 and 12-5-6. It was also the first overtime game of the year for Eau Claire.

The game was Eau Claire’s for most of the time, as a Tim Possehl (Fr.-Fond du Lac) goal at 10:21 in the first held up through two periods. Nate Smith (So.-Clayton) and Nicholas Kuqali (So-Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) had the assists on the power-play goal, Possehl’s first of the year.

It wasn’t until the third that Superior struck back, finding the net at 6:42. It ended 118 minutes, 47 seconds of shutout play from Tyler Brigl (So.-Eagan, MN), as the last previous goal scored on him was at 7:55 in the third of the UW-Stout game. Brigl would end up with 32 saves tonight.

The overtime did not last long, as Yellowjacket Chris Berry scored 1:01 into the period. It was the only shot for either side in the period.

Superior outshot Eau Claire overall 34 to 27 and had a 13 to 6 third period. The Blugolds were whistled eight times while Superior had seven penalties. Eau Claire, though, was the only one to take advantage, going 1 for 5. Superior went 0 for 6.

The game also saw a delay of 49 minutes to clean up and fix a shattered pane of glass.

The Blugolds will next take on St. Scholastica (MN) tomorrow in the second to last game of the regular season. Face-off is at 7 p.m. in Hobbs Ice Center.
