MEN’S HOCKEY NEVER TRAILS IN VICTORY OVER BETHEL

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s hockey team put in three power play goals tonight on its way to a 4-1 victory over Bethel University (MN) at Hobbs Ice Center.

Eau Claire is now 3-1-0 on the season and with the win the team tops last year’s mark for the entire season when the Blugolds went 2-21-4. The Royals are 1-2-0.

The team got on the board 7:51 into the game with its first power play score. Jesse Vesel (So.-Hibbing, MN) made the shot while Greg Petersen (So.-Maple Grove, MN/Totino-Grace) and Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska) assisted. Evan Byers (So.-Eagan, MN) doubled the total at 11:03 on a power play with Mike Schneider (So.-Owatonna, MN) assisting. The Blugolds outshot the Royals 12-to-5 in the period.

Bethel came out firing in the second with 14 shots and a goal at the 1:52 mark. The power play score came directly after Dan Krenn (Jr.-Madison/Culver Academy, IL) got a game disqualification for checking from behind. The Blugolds restored the two-goal advantage 7:36 into the middle period off a Sam Bauler (So.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) even-sided goal. Jeremiah Weber (Jr.-Hayward) was credited with the assist.

The final score came at the 7:08 mark in the third when Petersen found net off passes from Ben Hendrick (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) and Sean Garrity (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN). The power play goal came about a minute after Bethel’s Jeff Balvin's game misconduct for checking from behind.

Eau Claire was actually outshot 26-to-24 with Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) making 25 saves.

On power plays Eau Claire went 3-for-9 while the visitors cashed in on 1-of-8. The penalties went 11 for Eau Claire with a game disqualification. The Royals were whistled for 12 penalties with a game misconduct. A total of eight Bethel penalties occurred in the third period.

The Blugolds lead the lifetime series 9-5 with the last win coming in 2004 on an 8-2 victory.

The Blugolds will hit the ice tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. when they face Hamline University (MN) at Hobbs Ice Center.
