National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey of college first-year students and seniors designed to assess how involved they are in practices associated with higher levels of learning and how they have benefited from their college experiences. Colleges and universities can use the survey to help identify opportunities for institutional improvement in the areas of student learning and personal development, and for public accountability. See the NSSE web site for more information: http://nsse.iub.edu/index.cfm.

Survey questions fall into four broad categories of student engagement:

  1. Degree of involvement in activities that embody good educational practice.
  2. Assessment of the university atmosphere related to achievement.
  3. Self development and academic progress at the university.
  4. Personal data such as age, sex, ethnicity, current residence, enrollment status, year in school, and major.
