General Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science are differentiated, not by the major chosen, but by specific College requirements. If a major program is listed as leading to either the B.A., B.S. or B.F.A. degree, students electing that major may choose which of the three degrees they wish to earn. The college requirements specific to these degrees are listed below.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree
Candidates for the B.F.A. degree must meet all general requirements of the University and the College requirements in addition to the Department requirements.
University Requirements 39 Credits required for General Education (see University Graduation Requirements for details)
College Requirements Specific requirements for Bachelor of Fine Arts degree are published in conjunction with the university catalogue description of the major leading to the degree. The degree follows the All-University General Education program decribed in the section of the catalogue titled General Education Requirements with the exceptions noted below:

Math Competency
Competency at level of Math 101, or higher level course approved by the Math Department, with C or higher, not C- (not Math 203, 204, 305, Psyc 265, Soc 331)

Foreign Language/Foreign Culture Requirement
Three options (details in 2002 catalogue P.42):

  • Foreign language competency at the 102-level (or CDIS 303)
  • Study Abroad
  • 9 credits or courses with foreign culture designation

GE I. Communications.
6 credits, no more, no fewer with 3 credits from Subcategory A and 3 credits from Subcategory B.
(6 credits are required and no more than 6 may be used toward the total of 39 GE credits.)

Subcategory A Language Skills: Communication/Journalism; English (language and composition courses, excluding Engl 110 and 112); Foreign Languages (language and composition courses); GE-IA IDIS courses.
Subcategory B Analytical Skills: Computer Science; Mathematics; Philosophy (logic courses); GE-IB IDIS courses.

GE II. Natural Sciences.
9 Minimum to 12 Maximum credits (including one lab course from approved list), from at least two of the six subcategories

  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Geography (physical)
  4. Geology
  5. Physics
  6. Interdisciplinary studies-National sciences

GE III. Social Sciences.
9 Minimum to 12 Maximum credits from at least two of the seven subcategories

  1. Anthropology
  2. Economics
  3. Geography (cultural)
  4. Political Science
  5. Psychology
  6. Sociology
  7. Interdisciplinary studies-Social sciences (including AIS 101, Wmns 310, 433, 440)

GE IV Humanities.
9 Minimum to 12 Maximum credits from at least two of the five subcategories

  1. Fine Arts (Art, Art History, Music, Music Therapy, Theatre Arts, Dance)
  2. Philosophy (not logic), Religious Studies
  3. History
  4. English (literature), Foreign Languages (literature and civilization)
  5. Interdisciplinary studies-Humanities (including AIS 102, HUMS, IDIS, INTS, WMNS)

GE V Humanities.
0 Minimum to 6 Maximum credits
(new GE category to include courses from Colleges of Business and Professional Studies; interdisciplinary courses that cross two or more of the GE categories I, II, III, IV)

9 upper-level GE credits
from courses in at least two of the five GE categories (I, II, III, IV, V). May be included in 45 total GE credits.

Bachelor of Arts Degree
Candidates for the B.A. degree must meet all general requirements of the University and the College requirements in addition to the Department requirements.

College Requirements Math Competency
Math 110 or Math 104 (C or higher, not C-; or S); or satisfactory placement test or competency test score.

Foreign Language Competency
102-level foreign language course or AIS 112 or CDIS 303 (C or higher, not C-; or S); or satisfactory placement test score. NOTE: Must be a foreign language. Foreign culture courses and study abroad do NOT count for the BA.

GE I. Communications.
6 minmumto 9 maximum credits with at least 3 credits from Subcategory A and 3 credits from Subcategory B.
(6 credits are required and no more than 9 may be used toward the total of 45 GE credits.)
