Election day: On-campus voter turnout rises 25 percent
UW-Eau Claire expands program for children with autism
For two years, UW-Eau Claire has been bringing children with autism and their families to campus for intensive behavior intervention sessions. Last summer, the program expanded and now offers in-home services, which involve university psychology students working with children and families in their homes for up to 35 hours a week, said Dr. Kevin Klatt, assistant professor of psychology and coordinator of the program. Julie Ackerlund, a junior psychology major from Colfax, said her work with the on-campus and in-home programs has confirmed her career

Anne (Gerberich) Waddington, a 1975 UW-Eau Claire College of Business graduate, and her husband, Rick, have made a $25,000 gift to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation in support of two long-standing scholarship funds that honor the memory of her parents, Dr. John and Mary Lou Gerberich. Dr. John Gerberich was a UW-Eau Claire professor of biology from 1954-81. Mary Lou Gerberich was an educator and later an advocate on behalf of the aging.
John died in 1995 and Mary Lou in 1988. The Waddintons' gift is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the Foundation's ongoing campaign for private support for UW-Eau Claire's people and programs. Chamber soloists, drug policy reformist slated for upcoming Artists Series, Forum events Two presentations through the UW-Eau Claire Artists Series and The Forum are scheduled during the remaining weeks of November: The New York Chamber Soloists quartet of winds will perform music by Mozart, Villa-Lobos, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Debussy, Françaix and others during UW-Eau Claire's next Artists Series presentation Monday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall.
Ethan Nadelmann, founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance and author of the book "Cops Across Borders," will present "Building a Political Movement to End the War on Drugs" Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. The Drug Policy Alliance is the leading organization in the United States promoting alternatives to the war on drugs, and Nadelmann is widely regarded as the outstanding proponent of drug policy reform both in the United States and abroad. Einstein Fellow lives and works in nation's capital, far from Ladysmith science classroom: Mark Klawiter '80 has received an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship. On leave from his teaching position at Ladysmith High School, where he's taught chemistry and physics for 24 years, Klawiter is living and working in Washington, D.C., on projects funded through the National Science Foundation. Alumna overcomes major obstacles to achieve fitness success:
Kristi Larsen '97 competed in a bodybuilding and fitness contest and was featured in a national women's fitness magazine after recovering from spinal surgery, coping with her father's death and dealing with the loss of her job before achieving her goal to compete. Full story.

The number of UW-Eau Claire students voting on campus rose from 2,227 in the 2000 presidential election to 2,784 in 2004, the 
Dr. James Phillips, UW-Eau Claire professor of chemistry, has been awarded a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation of New York. Phillips, one of nine 2004 award recipients, was honored with the $60,000 award for his accomplishments in teaching, mentoring and research with undergraduate students. Phillips is one of the most scholarly active faculty members in UW-Eau Claire's chemistry department, said Cheryl Muller, chair of the chemistry department. "Since his arrival in 1998, he has been continuously successful working with students, obtaining funding for projects, and disseminating the results through papers and presentations," she said. Phillips is the second member of UW-Eau Claire's chemistry department to receive
the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. Dr. Jason Halfen won the award in 2001. 
Dr. Susan Haugen, UW-Eau Claire professor of accounting and finance, was recently named the 2004 Computer Educator of the Year by the International Association for Computer Information Systems for her outstanding academic and service accomplishments. The Computer Educator of the Year award is the highest award given by the association. Haugen was selected from a group of outstanding candidates from colleges and universities throughout the world. "Many of the past awardees are truly outstanding educators and researchers in the field of information systems, so it was very rewarding for me to be recognized for my accomplishments in teaching, research and service as a member of the faculty at UW-Eau Claire," said Haugen.
