Gubernatorial candidates debate on campus
More than 2,000 people crowded UW-Eau Claire's
Zorn Arena Oct. 16 to hear a debate between four of Wisconsin's
gubernatorial candidates: Jim Doyle, Scott McCallum, Ed Thompson
and Jim Young (lefthand photo, left to right). At right, UW-Eau
Claire social work majors Kristie Hanson, left, Bridget Hayes
and Marcelyn Burgos listened intently to the candidates' discussion.
The debate was co-sponsored
by the Western Wisconsin Press Club, WisPolitics.com and UW-Eau
Claire. A transcript of the debate is available at http://www.wispolitics.com/freeser/features/f0210/f02101607.html.

More graduates staying in Wisconsin
Nearly 73 percent of
the students graduating from UW-Eau Claire in 2001 are living
in Wisconsin, according to a recent alumni study. Of the 1,849
students graduating from UW-Eau Claire in 2001, 1,345 of them
are living in the state, the study indicates. Wisconsin higher
education officials have stated often in recent months that
the UW System is part of the solution to Wisconsin’s fiscal
problems. Providing the state with human capital goes a long
way toward building a strong economy, said UW-Eau Claire chancellor
Donald Mash. Read

Fund-raising campaign
total reaches $21.7 million
Donors have committed
$21.7 million so far to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence,
UW-Eau Claire’s ongoing fund-raising campaign. The new
campaign total was announced Oct. 11 at a meeting of the UW-Eau
Claire Foundation board of directors. The campaign, UW-Eau Claire’s
first, is one way the university is trying to ensure the future
of its tradition of excellence and overcome limits imposed by
current resources, said Carole Halberg, president of the UW-Eau
Claire Foundation. The campaign seeks $35 million in private
support for the university's people and programs by July 2005.
Recent gift commitments announced during the board meeting include
$1.5 million from James and Anne Ramsey, Longwood, Fla.; $125,000
from Lee and Mary Markquart, Eau Claire; $120,000 from Kell
Container Corp., Chippewa Falls; $75,000 from John and Helen
Drawbert, Altoona; and $25,000 from Northwestern Bank, Chippewa
Falls. Read

UW-Eau Claire faculty

of Education, funding initiatives to improve K-12 teaching in
western Wisconsin. One grant will increase the number of English
as a Second Language trained personnel in the area by nearly
700 percent (read

increase their knowledge of American history and develop hands-on
teaching techniques to help students better learn history (read

New faculty musicians bring talent, experience
UW-Eau Claire's department
of music and theatre arts has three new faculty musicians this
fall whose talent and experience will continue the university’s
reputation for excellence in the performing arts. Dr. Alexandre
Dossin, an international award-winning pianist, comes to UW-Eau
Claire’s piano division as assistant professor from the
University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was assistant
professor of piano. Dr. Jeffery Crowell, director of percussion
studies and assistant professor of music, formerly was at Montana
State University, where he was adjunct assistant professor of
music and assistant director of athletic bands. Soprano Mitra
Sadeghpour joins the voice studies division as assistant professor.
She comes to UW-Eau Claire from Luther College, where she taught
as an alumni lecturer in music. She is a doctoral candidate
in music at the Indiana University School of Music and is completing
