UW-Eau Claire ranks high in number of chemistry grads
 UW-Eau Claire graduates more students with bachelor's degrees in chemistry than most other colleges and universities in the country that offer only undergraduate chemistry programs, according to the American Chemical Society.
UW-Eau Claire was ranked third nationally — the highest of any Wisconsin college or university — in the number of chemistry graduates among the 339 colleges and universities that offer ACS-approved undergraduate chemistry programs, the ACS's Committee on Professional Training determined in its analysis. Colleges and universities that also offer master’s or doctoral programs in chemistry were not included in the tally.

The Forum opens with social justice advocate

The 69th season of The Forum at UW-Eau Claire will open with an Oct. 5 address by social justice advocate and author Maude Barlow, called "Canada's best-known voice of dissent" by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
An internationally renowned campaigner against corporate control of the world's dwindling freshwater supplies, Barlow will outline the issues facing the world today — scarcity, pollution and privatization — and solutions to meet these challenges. Her presentation, titled "Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. Full story.
Blugold Beginnings program receives grants
 UW-Eau Claire has received a $274,028 AmeriCorps grant to expand Blugold Beginnings, a program designed to give more area youth access to higher education through precollege outreach.
The newest funding will be used to develop a Blugold Beginnings College and Career Readiness program targeted at youth from low-income families, first-generation higher education youth and youth who are from minority racial and ethnic families, said Jodi Thesing-Ritter, associate dean of students and one of the authors of the grant proposal.
Blugold Beginnings also has received an $85,000 Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant, which is administered by the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp. on behalf of the state of Wisconsin.The funding will support the elementary-school component of the Blugold Beginnings program, which serves more than 1,000 fifth-graders from west-central Wisconsin schools.

International student population sees large increase
 "Priceless." That's how Daven Ghandi Rajan, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, describes his experience as an international student at UW-Eau Claire.
"It's all because of the opportunities that are available to individuals seeking personal growth, leadership roles, being active in the university — things I wouldn't necessarily associate with back home," said Rajan, a political science major in his fourth year at UW-Eau Claire.
Opportunities at UW-Eau Claire have been a draw this year for a record 215 international students. That number represents a 26 percent increase over last year's number of international students and includes students from countries — such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen — that have not been represented among the university's student population for a long time, said Dr. Karl Markgraf, director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for International Education. Health care organization pledges $500,000 to support university's health care administration program
 Golden Living, a leading national health care company, has made a commitment to make a $500,000 gift over the next 10 years to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation in support of the UW-Eau Claire Center for Health Administration and Aging Services Excellence and the UW-Eau Claire health care administration program.
Golden Living is a family of companies that provides long-term care, nursing services, sub-acute care, rehabilitation therapy, hospice and home health services. The gift is given in recognition of the excellence of CHAASE and the UW-Eau Claire health care administration program.
"We are committed to excellence in health care," said Larry Deans, president of Golden LivingCenters. "For us, quality starts at the top, with the administrators and directors of nursing of our LivingCenters. What better way to ensure continuing quality care for our patients and residents than to support the education and development of our future health care leaders. It also is a great way for us to give back to those who continue to play a significant role in laying the foundation for our industry." Full story.
Philosophy and religious studies professor earns Schoenfeld honors

Dr. Charlene Burns, professor of philosophy and religious studies, is the 12th recipient of the Maxwell Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship at UW-Eau Claire.
The award, which was created in honor of Dr. Maxwell Schoenfeld, a UW-Eau Claire history professor and scholar from 1964 until his death in 1996, recognizes a commitment to the university, excellence in teaching, achievement in scholarship and a commitment to student learning and life.
"Charlene represents exactly what the Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship is all about," said Dr. Bernard Duyfhuizen, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. "Her outstanding contributions to all facets of faculty work make her an exemplary recipient of this year's award." Full story.
Global warming survey results focus of 'Let's Do Lunch!'
 Global warming has become a hotly debated topic around the world, but how much do UW-Eau Claire students and area households know about global warming and global warming policy?
Dr. Eric Jamelske, a UW-Eau Claire associate professor of economics, will present "What do students and local households think about global warming?" from noon-1 p.m. Sept. 29 at Sweetwaters Restaurant in Eau Claire. During the "Let's Do Lunch!" presentation, Jamelske will discuss the results of a survey he and five students conducted and will highlight the similarities and differences in responses. Full story.
Faculty chamber ensemble to open First Fridays season

The First Fridays program for senior citizens will open its 2010-11 season Oct. 1 with a UW-Eau Claire faculty chamber recital featuring Dr. Richard Fletcher on clarinet, emeritus faculty member Paul Kosower on cello and Dr. Nicholas Phillips on piano. Their program includes Beethoven's Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11, and Brahms' Trio in A minor, Op. 114.
A free continental breakfast will precede the formal program at Christ Church Cathedral, located on the corner of Lake and Farwell streets in downtown Eau Claire. Doors will open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m., and the presentation will begin at 9 a.m. For the safety of the program's senior citizen audience, the event will be canceled if the Eau Claire Area School District has canceled or delayed classes due to hazardous weather.
