Commencement delivers new grads to alumni ranks
UW-Eau Claire held summer commencement exercises for 212 graduation candidates Aug. 6 in Zorn Arena. A total of 177 undergraduate students received bachelor's degrees, including 79 from the College of Arts and Sciences, 54 from the College of Business, 27 from the College of Education and Human Sciences and 17 from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Thirty-five graduate students received master's degrees, including 18 from the College of Arts and Sciences, one from the College of Business, 13 from the College of Education and Human Sciences and three from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. UW System Regent Peggy Rosenzweig delivered the "Charge to the Class." Also honored during the commencement ceremony were four recipients of Alumni Association awards (see story below) and alumni who have reached the 50-year anniversary of their graduation from UW-Eau Claire. The following were honored as Golden Blugolds: Gene Aumann '55, Janet (Roe) Barney '55, Barbara (Bloom) Garnett '55 and Peg (Hancock) Siggens '46. Four receive Alumni Association awards
The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association presented awards to four alumni and friends of the university Aug. 6 at a special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with commencement. Click on the recipients' names below for biographical information: Mary Jo Gagan '82 and Denise Sweet '85, '87 received the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. David John Lassek received the Honorary Alumnus Award, presented to nonalumni who have demonstrated great love of and service to UW-Eau Claire. Gerald Jacobson '75 received the Lifetime Excellence Award, presented to alumni who have demonstrated longtime and successful commitment to their careers and communities. Recipients have made a positive and dramatic impact through dedication to service and living their lives as a testimony to UW-Eau Claire's motto, "Excellence." John Kell, Chippewa Valley business leader, Blugold alumnus and active UW-Eau Claire supporter, died Aug. 5 in a motorcycle accident. He was 54. "This is a huge loss for John's family and friends, for the Chippewa Valley and for UW-Eau Claire," said Carole Halberg, UW-Eau Claire Foundation president. "We have lost a great friend." Kell, who was the president of Kell Container, Chippewa Falls, was secretary of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's board of directors and was slated to become chairman of the board this fall. A former Blugold football player, he also was on the universitiy's Football Advisory Council. He graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1973 with a degree in business administration. In May 2004 he received the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association's President’s Award. Kell was a generous supporter of UW-Eau Claire athletics and academics. The prestigious Kell Container Corp. Scholarship pays a year's tuition and living expenses for a student working with faculty on a research project, and Kell Container was among the community partners who contributed to the 2004 artificial turf project at the football field in Eau Claire's Carson Park, where the Blugold football team plays. Kell also started the Kell Container Blugold Football Opportunity Endowment, which supports the university's football program. Kell is survived by his wife, Betsy (Haydon) Kell, a 1973 UW-Eau Claire alumna; his two daughters; his mother and three brothers; and many other relatives and friends. The hill connecting upper and lower campus at UW-Eau Claire is open to traffic following completion of the Chippewa River bank stabilization project that began last year. The hill, which reopened July 28, had been closed to traffic since mid-July 2004 to minimize traffic on Garfield Avenue during the riverbank project. The riverbank stabilization project was necessary because of a history of bank erosion and concerns about public safety and damage to the university's infrastructure along the river that could result from a failure of the bank, according to Andrew Soll, UW-Eau Claire's vice chancellor for business and student services. The project began in January 2004 when trees and other vegetation were cleared from 1,200 feet of riverbank along Garfield Avenue from the university's pedestrian bridge to the Putnam parking lot. Other phases of the project began last July and included the removal of concrete rubble and reshaping the bank, installation of concrete cassions to stabilize the bank, placement of rock riprap, guardrail installation and replanting the bank with noninvasive native vegetation. Plantings included 56 trees, 291 shrubs and a wetland grass mix, said Terry Classen, UW-Eau Claire's director of facilities planning and management. Classen noted that the quality of construction on the project is excellent, although the time it took to complete was much longer than anticipated and held up plans for a reconstruction project along Garfield Avenue. "We are now in the initial phases of planning a renovation of Garfield Avenue," he said. See related Eau Claire Leader-Telegram story.
