and Human Services will speak at UW-Eau Claire commencement
ceremonies May 17 in Zorn Arena. Tommy Thompson, HHS secretary
and former Wisconsin governor, will present the “Charge

Alumni Association will honor Keane earlier in the day with
the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, recognizing his
professional accomplishments and his service to the state and
nation. Approximately 1,100 students will graduate from UW-Eau
Claire May 17 during the two ceremonies.
College
degree brings social, financial benefits, studies confirm
Earning a college degree brings a person immediate and long-term
financial and social benefits and has a positive effect
on the graduate’s health as well, according to two
studies from the University of Wisconsin System. “Clearly
there is the potential for tremendous growth in earnings
when someone completes a college degree,” said Frank
Goldberg, associate vice president for policy analysis and
research, who presented his findings to the UW System Board
of Regents April 10. “This growth in earnings benefits
Wisconsin as well through increased tax revenue paid by
college graduates.” Read

UW-Eau
Claire prepares for record budget cuts
In an April 23 message to the campus community, Chancellor
Donald Mash noted, “It has not been business as usual”
at UW-Eau Claire during the current biennium, and “it
will certainly not be business as usual during the next
two academic years as we plan and implement what is likely
to be a $5 million budget reduction.” To read the
Chancellor’s complete message and other state budget
information as it relates to UW-Eau Claire, go to the university’s

Fund-raising

Jazz
Ensemble I again receives national honors
For the fifth time in seven years, Down
Beat magazine — considered the premiere jazz publication
in the United States — again gave one of its “Best
College Big Band” awards to UW-Eau Claire’s
Jazz Ensemble I, giving it special recognition for the sub-category
of “outstanding performance.” Junior music major
Tom Krochock of Minneapolis also won a Down Beat award for
best classical trumpet. Jazz Ensemble I received yet another
honor in April when it was invited to perform at the Midwest

Kent State
memorial rededication
At left, Arthur Gulig, technical
director of University Theatre, helped plant a new tree
during the May 5 rededication of UW-Eau Claire's Kent
State Memorial. The memorial next to Davies Center,
which includes a plaque and four crabapple trees, was
first dedicated on May 8, 1970, in honor of the four
Kent State University students killed during anti-Vietnam
war protests 33 years ago. Gulig was a UW-Eau Claire
student at the time. The new tree Gulig helped plant
replaced one of the four original trees, which died
and had been removed.

Seeking
alumni business cards
Alumni and friends are invited to submit their
business cards to be included in a display at UW-Eau Claire's
fifth annual Majors Fair this fall. The goal of the fair
is to provide information on all of UW-Eau Claire’s
majors, minors and pre-professional programs to current
and prospective students, said Rita Webb, adviser in the
Academic Advising office. “The business card display
is intended to give students a sense of the types of career
paths our graduates follow, regardless of their majors,”
said Webb, coordinator of the display. Alumni who submit
their business cards are asked to indicate their year of
graduation and college major on the back side of the card.
Non-alumni college graduates also may submit cards, indicating
on the back that they are non-alumni, as well as their year
of graduation and major. Cards should be mailed to Webb,
UW-Eau Claire Advising and Academic Testing, P.O. Box 4004,
