honors 234 graduates
at summer commencement
Commencement exercises
for 234 candidates for graduation were held Saturday,
Aug. 2, in UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena. A total of
194 undergraduate students received bachelor's degrees,
and 40 graduate students received master's degrees.

Course information
sessions set for community members
Two informational sessions,
the Back-to-School Program on Aug. 21 and the Adult
Passport Program on Aug. 23, will be offered in
August to help community members gather information
about opportunities available to them at UW-Eau
Claire. At Community Registration Night on Aug.
28, community members can talk with university staff,
select courses and enroll for fall semester classes.

Chemistry
students and faculty pursue summer research
Stephen Drucker (left), assistant professor of
chemistry, is one of 13 chemistry faculty members who
have been working with more than 25 undergraduates in
a wide range of summer research projects. Pictured with
Drucker are Nathan Pillsbury, a May chemistry graduate
from Peshtigo, and Emily Gilles, a senior chemistry major
from Plum City. Drucker, Pillsbury and Gilles are researching
how molecular properties change when the molecules absorb
energy from laser light. Read

School of Education receives high
marks from DPI

UW-Eau Claire’s School of Education
recently received full accreditation approval from the
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, making its
teacher education program one of just two in the state
to-date to receive approval under new legislation that
governs such programs in Wisconsin. “Given the tradition
of excellence within the School of Education, I’m
not surprised by the outcome,” said Katherine Rhoades,
associate dean of the School of Education. “I’m
proud of how our faculty worked together to address the
accreditation process’s many challenges.”

Three UW-Eau Claire head coaches have
resigned from their positions this summer, interim director
of athletics Tim Petermann has announced. Lisa McIntyre
has stepped down after seven seasons as the women's gymnastics
coach to spend more time with her daughter, who was born
last October. Scott Steuernagel has stepped down after
five seasons as the men's cross country coach to take
a full-time position in the private sector. Todd Oehrlein
has stepped down after six seasons as the men's golf coach
and eight seasons as the assistant men's basketball coach
to take the head women's golf position at UW-Madison.

centenarians’ wills
 Harry
Egdahl and UW-Eau Claire alumna Bernadette (Walsh) Byrne
had at least two things in common: They both lived past
the age of 100, and they both valued higher education
at UW-Eau Claire — as evidenced by the gifts from
their estates recently received by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Employer recruitment of UW-Eau
Claire students remains strong
More Chippewa Valley employers than
ever are recruiting University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
students for internships and full-time jobs, a sign that
community partnership efforts are paying off for employers
and students seeking employment, Career Services director
Jeanne Skoug said. "The number of Chippewa Valley
employers contacting our office is up 65 percent,"
Skoug said. The increase comes at a time when employers
nationwide report they expect to cut hiring of new graduates
by 42 percent. Read

UW-Eau
Claire participates in national American Democracy Project
As many as 700 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
first-year students and their instructors will participate
in the American Democracy Project, a national initiative
this fall aimed at increasing student participation in
civic life. The American Association of State Colleges
and Universities, The New York Times and the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching are coordinating
the project, which includes 146 public colleges and universities.

Hmong radio show returns
to WUEC
Hmong language radio programming
returned to the Chippewa Valley Aug. 4 with the debut
of Xovtoojcua Xa-Suab Hmoob (Radio Hmong) on a sub-carrier
signal of UW-Eau Claire's radio station, 89.7 WUEC. The
show's hosts are Moua Her, a broadcast journalism student
at UW-Eau Claire, and Kao Xiong, who introduced Hmong
language radio to the Chippewa Valley in 1989 on WUEC.
The program later moved to WISM/WEIO radio until it was
cancelled in June of 2002 with the sale of the station.The
Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association is
accepting donations for the purchase of additional sub-carrier
radios, which are being distributed to Hmong-speaking
families in the region so they may hear Xovtoojcua Xa-Suab
Hmoob. The
Hmong Language Radio Project is a joint effort of the
Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, the
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Wisconsin Public
Radio.

Association presents awards
The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association presented awards
to five alumni and friends of the university Aug. 2 at a
special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with summer
commencement (see photos).

Alumni board has new members, president
William Hutchinson, a 1977 UW-Eau
Claire biology graduate, is the new president of the UW-Eau
Claire Alumni Association board of directors. Hutchinson,
an Eau Claire dentist, has been on the board since 1997.
He follows outgoing president Rick Foy, a 1980 journalism
graduate who is the public and media relations manager for
Liberty Check in Mounds View, Minn. Foy, of Cottage Grove,
Minn., also joined the board in 1997. He will stay on as
past president until May 2004.
The board also welcomes four new members:
Michael Johnson '93, River Falls, assistant principal at
River Falls High School; Gregory Voeller '88, Stillwater,
Minn., director of employee communication practice at Padilla
Speer Beardsley Inc., Minneapolis; Terry Schadeberg '85,
Waunakee, general manager and vice president at Nord Gear
Corp., Waunakee; and Jeff McCarthy '80, Oregon, major account
manager at Alliant Energy, Verona.
Several board members also are leaving following
various terms of volunteer service: Mike Rindo '78, Eau
Claire (1997-2003); Brian Elwood '95, Hudson (2001-2003);
Peter Eckerline '82, Wayzata, Minn. (2000-2003); and Cynthia
Hofacker '80, '85, Eau Claire (2001-2003).

Homecoming 2003: Come Back for the
Camaraderie
"Come Back
for the Camaraderie" is the alumni theme for UW-Eau
Claire Homecoming 2003, to be held Friday and Saturday,
Oct. 3-4. Although the Camaraderie, the popular social haunt
of so many UW-Eau Claire alumni, was destroyed by fire on
Jan. 7, 2001, Homecoming 2003 will bring the spirit of "The
Cam" alive once again. See

Gathering for Columbus, Ohio, area
alumni
So far 26 alumni
living or visiting in the Columbus, Ohio, area are registered
to attend an alumni gathering from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug.
16, at the home of Thomas and Jeannie Flesch, 595 Cardinal
Hill lane, Powell, Ohio. Plan to join them for this gathering!

A Salute to the Big
Band Era

| A Salute to the
Big Band Era, Sept. 2002 |
The
department of music and theatre arts will present the second
annual Salute to the Big Band Era on Saturday, Sept. 20,
2003, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. Alumni and friends
are invited to an afternoon or evening of music and dancing
to the sounds of UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensembles I and II,
under the direction of Robert Baca. The event is a special
tribute to all members of the U.S. armed forces, past and
present, and rosters will be posted at each performance
of veterans and current military members in attendance.
A social time is scheduled from 6:30-7:15 p.m. before the
evening performance for veterans, current military members
and their families. At each performance there will be a
birthday cake with 100 candles to be lit in celebration
and in tribute to the life and years of public service by
Bob Hope, 1903-2003. Ticket prices are $15 for the general
public, $12 for those 62 and over, $12 for youth 17 and
under, $12 for UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff, $11 per person
for organized groups of 10 or more, and $10 for UW-Eau Claire
and UW System students. Tickets will go on sale Aug. 27

College of
Business Bash in Minneapolis
Business
