Blugold
women finish third in NCAA Division III
The Blugold women's basketball team defeated the University
of Rochester 82-77 in double overtime March 22 to take third
place in the NCAA Division III national tournament in Terre
Haute, Ind. The win came after the Blugolds' 52-49
overtime loss the previous night to Eastern Connecticut
State. (See
photos from the women's earlier playoff action.) Following
the team's third-place finish head coach Tonja Englund was
selected as the 2003 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA Division
III National Coach of the Year, and three players received
postseason recognition from D3Hoops.com, the "definitive
Internet resource for Division III basketball." Read

Chancellor
delivers wartime message to campus
During this time of U.S. war with Iraq, the UW-Eau Claire
campus will continue to be a place of learning, reflection,
tolerance and discussion, Chancellor Donald Mash said recently
in an e-mail message to the campus community. He also expressed
the campus community's hope for the safe return of the military
men and women serving in the conflict, including nearly
50 UW-Eau Claire students. Visit the News

Class openings
remain for UW-Eau Claire Summer Session
There are still openings in some of the more than 220 undergraduate
and graduate courses, including 21 Web-based courses, offered
during UW-Eau Claire’s 2003 Summer Session. Individuals
(including those not currently enrolled at the university)
can register up until the first day of class for each session.
The three-week session runs May 19-June 6 and the eight-week
session runs June 9-Aug. 1. Two four-week sessions also
are offered during the eight-week session. See the online
summer 2003 class schedule for information about course

Sparks
builds national reputation in math education
"Whatever you do, don't be a nothing." Those words
of inspiration from a mysterious stranger back in 1962 have
stayed with Billie Sparks, who's been on the UW-Eau Claire
math faculty for 34 years, and inspired him to do his best.
That has earned him — and the UW-Eau Claire mathematics
department — a nationwide reputation in mathematics
education.

Gift supports
UW-Eau Claire business internship initiative
Just
2½ years ago, Anna Schrader was a UW-Eau Claire business
student and an intern at Silicon Logic Engineering in Eau
Claire. Today she's the firm's director of corporate communications.
Thanks to a recent $25,000 gift from Charter Bank Eau Claire
to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, increasing numbers of UW-Eau
Claire business students now are likely to repeat Schrader's
progression from student intern to full-time employee for
a Chippewa Valley firm. Charter Bank's gift will fund a
new initiative to develop internship opportunities for College
of Business students with businesses in the Chippewa Valley.

New appointee
to supervise critical student services
Kimberly
Barrett has been named associate vice chancellor for student
development and diversity at UW-Eau Claire. Barrett, who
will begin her duties July 1, is currently vice provost
for student affairs at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay,
Canada. At UW-Eau Claire, Barrett will serve as the dean
of students and also will supervise the Academic Skills
Center, Advising and Academic Testing, American Ethnic Coordinating
staff, Career Services, Counseling Center, Health Services,
Services for Students with Disabilities and student services
extramural grant programs. Read

White House staffer to speak
on role of science in homeland security
Dr. William Jeffrey,
a senior director in the White House’s Office of Science
and Technology Policy, will present a seminar April 25 at
the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The seminar, titled
“Homeland Security: The Role for Science and Technology,”
will begin at 3 p.m. in Room 007 of Phillips Science Hall.
Jeffrey, a physicist, has worked extensively on science
and technology issues during the formation of the new Department
of Homeland Security.The presentation, which is is free
and open to the public, will be part of UW-Eau Claire’s
chemistry department spring seminar program. For more information,
