| UW-Eau
Claire remembers . . .
|
Hundreds of UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff
filled the Central Campus Mall the evening of Sept. 11
for a candelight vigil as they marked the first anniversary
of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Earlier in the day, members
of the campus community silently crowded the footbridge
at 7:45 a.m. as two trumpeters played taps. Those on the
bridge then dropped 3,000 rose petals into the Chippewa
River in remembrance of the more than 3,000 people believed
to have died in the attacks.

Alumnus recounts Sept. 11 experience in new
book
UW-Eau Claire alumnus
and New York City newspaper reporter David Paul Kuhn made his
way on Rollerblades into lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001,
just as the second World Trade Center tower fell. Kuhn, a reporter
for the New York bureau of The Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's (and
the world's) largest circulation daily newspaper, stayed at
Ground Zero until the following afternoon. Kuhn shares what
he saw, heard, smelled, felt and thought during those hours
in "All I Hear Is Silence," an essay in the book "At
Ground Zero: 25 Stories from Young Reporters Who Were There"
(Thunder's Mouth Press, Sept. 2002). "Everything about
it was very instinctual," Kuhn said of his coverage of
the tragedy. The former Spectator editor added that his internships
during college, at Time and Money magazines as well as at several
daily newspapers, helped prepare him to cover such a large story.
UW-Eau Claire again ranks
in Midwest top tier
For the eighth consecutive
year, U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks the University
of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in its top tier of universities in the
12-state Midwest region. In the magazine's 2003 edition of its
annual "America's Best Colleges" guidebook, UW-Eau
Claire is ranked No. 4 among the regional public universities
in the Midwest, a region that includes schools in states stretching
from the Dakotas to the West, Missouri to the South and Ohio
to the East. Read

Certification program
addresses teacher shortage
A "fast track"
pilot program at UW-Eau Claire helps address the teacher shortage
by bringing qualified people into the teaching profession who
do not having teaching degrees. The program will certify nontraditional
students who have bachelor's degrees in certifiable areas —
such as English and biology — to teach in grades 6-12.
Eighteen adults are enrolled in the second semester of the three-semester
alternative teacher certification program. Read

Mathematics, computer
science receive $400,000 NSF grant
UW-Eau Claire's mathematics
and computer science departments have received a $400,000 grant
from the National Science Foundation to develop the Excellence
in Mathematics and Computer Science Scholarship Program. Beginning
with the 2003-04 academic year, the initiative will provide
30 qualifying mathematics or computer science students with
renewable scholarships and opportunities to enhance their academic
programs. The initiative is expected to help increase the number
and diversity of students majoring in mathematics or computer
science at UW-Eau Claire. In addition to the $400,000 provided
by the NSF, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation has committed to raise
an additional $100,000 to support students who receive funding
from the NSF program. Read

Retired faculty, staff support
university through campaign
After devoting their careers to UW-Eau Claire's
mission of learning and service, many emeriti faculty and retired
staff members have extended their support of that mission into
the future through gifts to the university's first comprehensive
fund-raising campaign, Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence.
Karl Andresen and Jim Mueller are two of those individuals:
-
Karl
Andresen, professor emeritus of political science, and his
wife, Helen, have established a charitable gift annuity that
eventually will supplement the Karl Andresen Scholarship Fund,
which was established when Andresen retired in 1988. "Joining
the planned giving program makes us feel we are part, albeit
a small part, or the continued growth of the university,"
Karl Andresen said.
- Jim Mueller, who retired in 1996 after 19 years
as a locksmith at UW-Eau Claire, has included a bequest in his
will for a contribution to the athletics program. "I wasn't
able to particpate in athletics as a student because of health
issues, so my gift was a way to participate in Blugold athletics,
which I've supported through my volunteer work and continue
to enjoy," Mueller said.
For more information on contributing to Fulfilling
the Promise of Excellence, contact Kimera Way, UW-Eau Claire director
of development, by calling (715) 836-5180 or sending e-mail to
wayykk@uwec.edu, or visit
the campaign
Web site.
