Jill (Bubeck) Bier '00 and Ted (Cummings) Bier '00
Where and how did you meet while students at UW-Eau Claire? We met the first week of our freshman year. Ted was assigned to Horan Hall and I was in Towers. During the first week of school, a girl on my floor (Suzy) came around to the rooms and asked if anyone wanted to go over to Horan Hall to watch Monday night football with her friend (Jeff) and others on his floor. Since I went to college alone, I jumped at the idea to meet people and gratefully accepted her offer. About halfway through the game, I happened to glance toward the open door and see Ted walk by toward his room. I asked Jeff who that nice-looking guy was. Jeff went down the hall and asked Ted to join us. After the game, the two of us sat outside the dorms until about 2 a.m. discussing family, friends, dreams, interests, etc. We made plans to meet for lunch the following day and began to build a strong, true friendship. It wasn’t until about the middle of October that we exchanged our first kiss, and the rest is history!

Was it a “love connection” from the start? I wouldn’t say it was a "love connection" from the start but rather an honest, open friendship that has evolved into the ultimate love connection.
Is there a place on campus that is special for the two of you? The cement circle between Horan Hall and Towers, where we sat and talked all night, as well as the tree behind Horan Hall where we had our first picnic and laid under the stars.
What is your fondest memory as a couple that connects you to UW-Eau Claire?
• Our first true date was at Mona Lisa’s on Water Street where we shared a coffee-flavored cake dessert; we still talk about that dessert which unfortunately they no longer serve.
• One Valentine’s Day, Ted converted the dorm basement kitchen into a romantic candle-lit dinner — I was so surprised. He tricked me into the basement by telling me there was a fire the previous night.
• Of course, Sneakers — where else could we dance like idiots and not care what we looked like? ;)
If you are married, when did you tie the knot? We were married Sept. 18, 2004, after courting for more than nine years. We both changed our last names to that of Ted’s maternal grandparents and are now Jill and Ted Bier. We live in Madison, where Jill is a manager at a CPA firm and Ted is a research specialist for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. |
