The Council Oak Tree is the symbol of UWEC.   For 300 years, the Council Oak represented a place of peace in the Chippewa Valley.    The Tree was destroyed in a windstorm in 1987, and replaced by a new Council Oak Tree, planted in 1990.
Below are photos of the ceremonies that accompanied the planting of the new Council Oak Tree on Earth Day, 1990.
The University made a solemn commitment on Earth Day 1990 to students, faculty, staff, and Native American communities to nurture and protect the tree for the next 300 years.  The University also honors the memory of the old Council Oak Tree in its Excellence logo.
The Council Oak Tree is now threatened by plans for a new Student Union.   The current plan for the Student Union will result in cutting down the Council Oak Tree.
