Education

The continued use of Indian Mascots not only affects the often times incorrect and limited views the general American public holds of American Indian people and culture, but also the educational experiences of both native and non-native children alike.  The American Psychological Association; the very scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States and consists of the largest membership of Psychologists worldwide with some 148,000 members has recently called for the immediate removal of all Indian-related Mascots (APA, 2005).  The APA stated that “the continued use of American Indian mascots, symbols, images, and personalities undermines the educational experiences of all communities- especially those who have had little or no contact with Indigenous peoples”(APA, 2005).  Not only is the APA expressing concern for the emotional well-being of American Indian people, but they suggest the stereotypical Indian Mascot portrayals affect all people who are subject to viewing them, Native American or not.  Furthermore, the APA finds the use of Indian Mascots in an academic setting (High school/University) creates and unwelcoming and hostile learning environment for American Indian students and continues to perpetuate stereotypes and undermine their self-esteem. Simply put, Indian Mascots create an unstable learning environment in which American Indian people wishing to maintain tribal identity are continually reminded of the inaccurate and offensive portrayal the dominant society continues to depict.   Please click the self-esteem button above to further examine the Psychological harm Indian Mascots inflict upon Native students in public education.
