Testing Out of English 110

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to test out of English 110:

  • Students with a high school rank in class in the top 10% AND an ACT English of at least 28 or an SAT Verbal of 610.
  • Students with an ACT English of 28 or an SAT Verbal of 610 with a 3.5 average in their high school English classes.
  • New freshmen 22 or older with an English Placement Score (UWENGL) of 565 or above.

These students may take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) English Composition with Essay. If they receive a 57 on this exam, they have met the English Course requirement and the English Competency requirement. THEY DO NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE.

Procedures

When Offered: The test is computer-based and is offered by appointment through the Academic Testing Office. Call 836-5522 for the available dates..

Cost: The cost is $75/test, $65 payable to CLEP and $10 payable to UW-Eau Claire.

Registration procedures:

  • Students who have met the test-out criteria based on their high school rank in class or are 22 or older with a UWENGL of 565 or above may come to the Academic Testing Office, Schofield 226, to register at least one week prior to the test date.
  • Students who have met the test-out criteria based on their English grades must bring a final high school transcript to the Director of English Composition, Hibbard 353, and obtain a letter indicating that they are eligible. The student then should bring the letter to the Academic Testing Office to register for the test.
