Scholarship Listings

Many types of financial aid exist to help students meet the cost of college. Pell Grants, Stafford or Perkins Loans, and College Work Study are familiar resources which older-than-traditional-age students regularly tap. These forms of financial support are accessed by annually filing a FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid) available from the Financial Aid office in Schofield 115 or from the Federal Student Aid website.

The Nontraditional Student Services (NSS) Scholarship website lists scholarships available---local and/or private scholarships---specifically for nontraditional students who are defined as those who are 24 or older, or under age 24 but are married and/or are a parent. Also included are those persons who are military veterans or who have has a significant break in their education. These students all have needs and characteristics not necessarily shared by "traditional" college students. furthermore, please see Locating Other Scholarships below for information about other scholarships for which you may qualify.

The recipient of a grant, scholarship, or fellowship may have an impact on the familiar forms of financial aid. Consult the Financial Aid Office in Schofield 115, 715-836-3373 to discuss your individual circumstances. Eligibility criteria for the scholarship listed here vary. Some are need-based, though most are not. In most cases you will need to have a current FAFSA on file in the Financial Aid office. Some specify field or major, grade point average, or gender. Some are quite general. Read each listing carefully to learn if you meet the specific criteria.

Return to TopTips for Scholarship Applicants

The following tips can be used to establish some general guidelines in writing scholarship applications. You may want to create a scholarship resume as a reference in applying for various scholarships. However, you will want to consider the perspective of the donor or the purpose of the organization, and then tailor your answers to their mission.

Address the questions asked. Write enough to let the selection committee get to know you as a student and as a person. Do not be too concise.

What are your education/career goals?

  • Be specific and accurate when describing your education goals.
  • Have you mapped out a realistic sequence to reach that goal?
  • How did you decide on these goals?
  • Do you have relevant employment or other experience?
  • Do you have special skills to support your goals?
  • Do you have a related personal or family experience which inspired you to choose this particular program?

What effect will a scholarship have on my financial aid?

It may reduce financial aid dollar for dollar. For example, a $1,000 scholarship reduces federal or state aid by $1,000. The trade off, however, could be in the loan area - a $1,000 scholarship reduces a recipient's need for $1,000 of student loans. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.

What effect will a scholarship have on my income tax?

It could be taxable income. Scholarships become taxable only if they are greater than the awardees' costs for tuition, books, and supplies - and then only the amount greater than the cost of tuition, books, and supplies is taxable. It is a very good idea to keep receipts for these latter items. ("Supplies" does not include housing.) The taxable amount of a scholarship is self-reported. It does not require a 1099 form.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a grant?

Scholarships are typically based on merit and derive from private sources, whereas grants are typically based on need and derive from the federal or state government.

Can I reapply for a scholarship?

Yes, certainly, if you've not been a recipient. If you have been a recipient, check the guidelines; if nothing prevents reapplication, try again.

Where do I go to receive the money?

Most scholarship monies are sent directly to the UW-EC Business Office and applied to the recipient's bill for tuition. If scholarship monies exceed the tuition bill, a refund check will be issued to you.

Should I send a thank you note to the donor?

Yes! It is always a courtesy to send a thank you note and donors love to hear from the recipient. Most Foundation scholarships from UW-Eau Claire will give specific information on where to send a thank you note and to whom it should be addressed. Send the than you note shortly after receiving the announcement that you have been selected.
