Terri's Tidbits
Wow! We are only a month away from the end of this semester. It always comes barreling at me like an academic freight train, and I can hear the whistle blowing and the wheels rolling down the tracks getting closer every day. It gets hard at this time to keep our priorities straight, or to even know what they are at times. There is so much homework; assignments, readings, papers to write, exams and even pod casts to make if you are a Scientific and Technical Writing major like myself. If you celebrate the holidays then you have all of the planning surrounding them as well, add in jobs and families, and it can be a pretty chaotic time.
My motto at this point in the semester is to just "keep it simple".
We can only do so many things and be so many things to so many people. We can only do the best that we can do and after that the rest just has to be let go of. This weekend I had homework, so much homework to do, but also all of my kids were home and we are the type of family who spends time together on the weekends. As a single parent it can be tough to balance it all, but this weekend I decided to keep it simple and just do the best I could do, and it was a wonderful weekend! This is a rough time of the year financially, so the kids and I spent our family time together building a gingerbread house, playing Yahtzee, having a nice Sunday breakfast/brunch of sausage gravy and biscuits and sweet rolls, and we just played and enjoyed being together. In between those family times, I did homework. I was able to get 5 papers written this weekend and started on the 6th! The weekend came to an end and frankly it was a really nice weekend of free entertainment and lots of laughing.
At times it is important to say no to areas outside of our academics and family life. It is OK to let go of some things in order to make our lives more manageable so that we can give more to our priorities. At this point in the semester it might be time for some of you to remember that you need to take care of yourself/your academics/families (not necessarily in that order) and let go of a few others things so that you can keep it simple. I realize that not all of you are parents, and you might have different obligations and responsibilities, but regardless of what they are, needing to keep it simple and balanced at this time of the semester applies to all non-trads.
Thanks for the emails regarding the social club. I am thinking that it might be a good idea to meet soon, but that it won't really get going until Spring semester. I'd like to set up one meeting time this semester and then we will really get it going in January. Keep sending me any thoughts you have on this, I am getting them and reading them!
Have a great week ahead!

I hope that you are all keeping your head above water. Terri said it well when she said, “keep it simple”. If you are having problems, remember we have a great Counseling Center on campus where you can talk in confidence with a neutral party. Sometimes just saying your concerns out loud can help. I’m here, too. Let me know if you want to meet.
Have a great week—I’m off tomorrow afternoon to visit my granddaughter at her kindergarten. It’s a first for me—“Grand Visitor Day”!

You can do anything if you put your focus on how to do it rather than on why you can’t.
