FRESHMAN VS. TRANSFER
If you are admitted to the university, you will be considered a freshman if you have never taken any transferable courses since you graduated from high school. You will be considered a transfer student if you enrolled in any transferable courses after graduation, even if you did not successfully complete them.
SPECIAL STUDENT STATUS
Beginning as a special student is a common route by which nontraditional students begin a degree program and establish a current academic track record. Credits and grades earned as a special student are counted the same as they are for admitted students. Academic standing is also determined for special students. REMEMBER, your grades earned as a special student will affect whether you are admitted to UW-Eau Claire or any where else.
APPLICATIONS
To complete an application for admission, pick up the form from the Admissions Office, Schofield 112, or access the form online at http://apply.wisconsin.edu/. Special Students may pick up an application form from the Registration Office, Schofield 128 or online at http://www.uwec.edu/registrar/bulletin/special.htm. Both forms are also available from the Nontraditional Student Services Adviser.
All admitted students must attend an Orientation prior to registering for classes their first semester. These orientation sessions include meeting with an adviser, as well as an introduction to the services available at the university.
All students who do not have credit for college level English or mathematics are required to take UW-System placement tests. If you intend to take a foreign language and would like to take a placement test, these are available in French, Spanish, German, and Japanese.
If you have taken placement tests at another UW-System school we can usually obtain those scores for you. The Academic Testing office is located in Schofield Hall, room 226.
