Competencies

The word competency is used at UW-Eau Claire in connection with English, mathematics, and foreign language/foreign culture. Advisees and advisers can see whether competencies have been met by checking MyBlugold and/or the degree audit.

English Competency

The English Competency requirement has been changed as of October, 2003. Students graduating under the 2004-2005 Catalogue or later must achieve a C or higher in English 110 or its equivalent.

Students graduating under the 2003 Catalogue or earlier follow the policy below:

  • Students who have received a grade of C or higher in English 110 or its equivalent (the course that met the English composition course requirement) have met the UW-Eau Claire English competency requirement.
  • Student who received a grade of C- or lower in their English composition course must take and pass the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) English Composition with Essay examination. This is a computerized exam that is offered by Academic Testing, Schofield 226. The cost is $60.00. You can call 836-5522 for more information and to schedule a time to take this examination.

Math/Statistics Competency

A minimum competency in mathematics and/or statistics is required of all students before completion of the sophomore year (60 earned credits). The Colleges, Schools, and some programs have selected specific math courses as requirements for their majors. Students should check with their advisers and/or on their degree audits to determine the way in which their program requires them to demonstrate math competency.

Students who are required to complete Math 010 or Math 020 must do so before they earn 30 credits. If not, their registration will be blocked, and they will need to see the Dean of the College or School in which they're enrolled.

Foreign Language/Foreign Culture Competency

The ways in which students can demonstrate foreign language/foreign culture competency vary by catalogue year, so it is vital for students to know the specific competency required under their catalogue as well as by their College, School, or program. The degree audit and adviser are the best resources for this information.
