Go Back to 1st Year Requirements for All Majors
Students interested in a Communication and Journalism program of study should visit the department office, Hibbard Hall 152, to learn how to declare a major or minor and to obtain an adviser for their program. Students can also read instructions for how to declare a major or minor at http://www.uwec.edu/registrar/ChgofMajor/procedures/CJ.htm
The Department of Communication and Journalism (CJ) offers standard major and minor programs in Communication, Mass Communication and Journalism with the following options for areas of emphasis:
Communication majors/minors:
Communication: Organizational Communication
Communication: Public Communication
Journalism majors/minors:
Journalism: Broadcast Journalism
Journalism: Print Journalism
Mass Communication majors/minors:
Mass Communication: Advertising
Mass Communication: Public Relations
All Journalism and Mass Communication majors and minors are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). The Communication majors and minors are not eligible for that group's accreditation.
The common core for all of the majors consists of CJ 105 (Communication in the Information Age) and CJ 300 (Research Methods). In addition, all CJ majors must take CJ 202 (Fundamentals of Speech) to satisfy the General Education-IA requirement.
ACEJMC standards require that students in the four accredited sequences complete 80 credits of coursework unrelated to their major, including at least 65 credits in arts and sciences curriculum unrelated to their major with the remaining 15 additional credits in curriculum from anywhere outside of the department.
Students may not have both a major and a minor in the Department of Communication and Journalism.
