Go Back to 1st Year Requirements for All Majors

Chemistry
First Year Advising 2008-2009

Printable Version Printable Version

Chemistry, A.C.S. (Code 100-006) - comprehensive major
Chemistry, Liberal Arts (Code 100-005) - comprehensive major
Chemistry, Liberal Arts (Code 100-201) - standard major
Chemistry, Teaching (Code 100-204) - standard major

Chemistry courses are mostly sequential. Upper-division courses have chemistry, math and physics prerequisites that must be satisfied during the first two years if possible. Many students participate in undergraduate research collaboration with a faculty member. This can begin as early as the first semester on campus and last throughout the student's career.

The Chemistry Department also offers a Comprehensive ACS Chemistry major that is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS major has a few more chemistry requirements than the Comprehensive Chemistry major.

COURSE SELECTION
UW-Eau Claire respects individual differences. This guide complements rather than substitutes for individual advising.

ESSENTIAL COURSES
For the most flexibility in the major and graduation in four years, students should take the following courses in their first year: Chem 115 (Chemical Principles) and Chem 218 (Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry). Engl 110 and Math 114 should be completed during the first year. Students may also take Chem 103 and Chem 104 during their first year, depending on their high school chemistry and math preparation (see Program Readiness below). Taking Chem 103 and 104 instead of Chem 115 eliminates flexibility for electives in later semesters.

PROGRAM READINESS

  • Chem 115 requires superior preparation in high school chemistry. Successful students have often taken AP chemistry, and/or earned strong grades in high school chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Students who do not have sufficient high school chemistry preparation or who place into a lower level math course (Math 109 or lower) should take Chem 103 instead, and then Chem 104 in the Spring Semester.
  • Students should be prepared to start mathematics in Math 112 (Precalculus Mathematics) or above.
  • Students who place into remedial math (010 or 020) should delay their chemistry coursework until their math skills prepare them for algebra.

COURSES TO BE AVOIDED
Chem 100 (Chemistry: Issues & Answers) and Chem 127 (Chemistry and Climate) do not count toward the Chemistry major or minor.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Foreign Language/Foreign Culture requirement
  • The University Cultural Diversity requirement
  • Two credits of wellness
  • At least 39 credits must be at the 300 level or above, including 9 credits of General Education in two categories
  • At least 90 credits must be from courses in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Total credits must equal at least 120

Other course requirements -

  • Sufficient credits selected from Math 216, courses numbered above 300 in chemistry, or courses numbered 300 or above in biology, computer science, geology, mathematics and physics (and counting toward majors in those disciplines) to give a minimum total of 65 credits.
  • Students planning for graduate studies in chemistry are encouraged to take additional courses in mathematics (216, 312 or 324) and physics. Additional coursework in technical writing and reading knowledge of a foreign language may also be beneficial.

MINORS
The Chemistry Department offers a minor that requires 24 credits in chemistry. Chem 100, Chem 127 and Chem 150 do not count toward the minor.
