English Composition Requirement for Transfer Students

COURSE REQUIREMENT

  1. Transfer students from within the UW System who have completed the English composition requirement at another UW institution will be considered to have completed their composition course work requirement. If they have received a C or higher, they have met the competency requirement.
  2. Transfer students from within the UW System who have only partially completed the English composition requirement at another UW institution will have to complete the requirement at UW-EC, either by taking English 110 (if they have earned fewer than 2.66 credits at their previous institution) or English 112 (if they have earned between 2.66 and 4 credits with a grade of C or better, but have not met the composition requirement at their previous institution).
  3. Transfer students from outside the UW System who have completed 4 or more semester credits of English composition from an accredited college or university (with a substantial research component) will be considered to have met the UW-EC composition course work requirement. If they have received a C or higher, they have met the competency requirement.
  4. Transfer students from outside the UW system with between 2.66 and 4 semester credits of composition (e.g., 3.33 credits) and with a grade of C or better can take English 112. The competency exam will be given as the final in this course.

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT

Students who transfer with the equivalent of English 110 and have received a C or higher in the course have met the English competency requirement.

Students who have a grade lower than C and are under the 2003-2004 Catalogue (or an earlier one) have two options:

  1. They can retake English 110 and receive a C or higher
  2. They can take the CLEP English Composition with Essay examination and score a 45 or higher.

Students who enter under the 2004-2005 Catalogue must achieve a C or higher in their English composition course. If they transfer in with a grade lower than a C, they will have to retake English.
