Sociology

(Printable version)

Sociology is the branch of the social sciences that examines the causes and consequences of group behavior. In sociology courses, students explore many different aspects of society, such as interpersonal communication, race relations, class inequality, population dynamics, gender relations, social movements and the family.

Why study sociology?

  • Sociology is the broadest discipline among the social sciences. Rather than specializing in just one aspect of human behavior, students in sociology classes study gender, race, class, culture, politics, interpersonal communication and many other topics.
  • Sociology classes emphasize discussion and analysis of social issues. Students learn more about their own perspectives as well as why other people may have different perspectives. They also learn how to positively affect society.
  • Sociology majors and minors develop a deep understanding of human behavior and how to analyze data about people. They are prepared to enter a broad range of professions, including education, social services, criminal justice and health care.
