(Option B — ages 10-21)
Teaching is a people-oriented profession that requires a broad background of experiences and academic preparation. Through a series of courses and experiences, UW-Eau Claire students develop knowledge, process skills and attitudes necessary for effective teaching. At the completion of the program, students are prepared for middle-level grades and high school teaching or for grades K-12 in selected areas.
Why study secondary or middle/secondary education?
- The program leads to early adolescence through adolescence licensure to teach in the state of Wisconsin.
- Teaching is one of the most important and personally rewarding occupations in our society today.
- While studying education, you will develop a variety of skills that will be useful in other fields including time management, the ability to think on your feet, teamwork and communication.

Undergraduate programs
Students who pursue Option B are required to complete a major and minor, double major or comprehensive major, and a professional sequence consisting of teaching methods and related courses. Completion of the program provides certification to teach at the junior high/middle school, high school and post-high school levels. Following is a list of programs for teaching majors:

Program admission requirements
Before seeking admission to the program, students choosing Option B must complete CI 210 and CI 211. Upon completion of these courses, students can apply to the program and should file a formal application during the first week of October (for spring admission) or of March (for fall admission). Candidates prepare a portfolio based on the 10 Wisconsin Teaching Standards for the department of curriculum and instruction. Additionally, content departments have requirements for admission. Students are admitted on a selective and limited basis from a pool of candidates who meet minimum criteria.

Professional semester admission requirements
All students seeking licensure through programs in the department of curriculum and instruction must complete a full semester of student teaching or an internship. Before doing this, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Earn a minimum grade of B- in each of the professional education courses (CI 210, 211, 312, 317, 318, 328, content methods).
- Have resident, total and professional education course GPAs of 2.75 or higher.
- Receive departmental approval.
High school preparation
- Prospective teaching majors are encouraged to develop their personal skills by tutoring, working at summer camps or other youth activities and by getting involved in volunteer activities.
- All students who enroll at UW-Eau Claire are required to have a minimum of 17 college preparatory units including:
– 4 years of English (at least 3 composition and literature)
– 2 years of a single foreign language
– 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, 1 advanced college preparatory math)
– 3 years of natural science
– 3 years of social science (1 must be world or American history)
– 2 additional units in the areas already mentioned or other academic areas
