Latin American Studies

Global interdependence makes second language proficiency and cross-cultural understanding essential. Nations and individuals are increasingly linked via media, technology, travel and business. UW-Eau Claire Latin American studies students gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Latin American region, its people and cultures.

Why study Latin American studies?

  • Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States.
  • Prepare for a career in the fields of education, government, social services, international business, journalism, law and medicine.
  • Recent events, such as NAFTA, and the significant Hispanic population in the United States will increase the demand for professionals who are proficient in the Spanish language and prepared to work with the people of Latin America in the United States and abroad.

Career options

  • Serve in a governmental agency (Peace Corps, Armed Forces, Foreign Service, etc.).

Undergraduate programs

The Latin American studies program is a multidisciplinary program including the following majors/minors:

Comprehensive Majors (require no minor)

  • Latin American Studies – liberal arts
  • Latin American Studies – teaching*

Standard Major

  • Latin American Studies – liberal arts

Minor

  • Latin American Studies – liberal arts

*Leads to licensure to teach Spanish in grades 6-12.


High school preparation

  • Students interested in the Latin American studies major are encouraged to successfully complete high school courses in English, public speaking, world civilization and Spanish.
  • All students who enroll at UW-Eau Claire are required to have a minimum of 17 college preparatory units including:
    – 4 years of English (at least 3 composition and literature)
    – 2 years of a single foreign language
    – 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, 1 advanced college preparatory math)
    – 3 years of natural science
    – 3 years of social science (1 must be world or American history)
    – 2 additional units in the areas already mentioned or other academic areas

Course work

The Latin American studies major, which is a multidisciplinary program, includes extensive coursework in Spanish. Students also will take courses in Spanish culture and literature, as well as art history, economics, history and political science. Students in the comprehensive liberal arts major also may pursue relevant courses in anthropology, sociology, communications and journalism.

Study abroad requirement

Students in the Latin American studies program must spend a summer (for a minor) or a semester abroad (for a major) in an approved program in Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile or elsewhere in Latin America.
