The UW-Eau Claire department of information systems provides you with the organizational computing skills and the general business and management knowledge you need to improve individual and organizational performance.

What is information systems?

Information systems is the study of how information technology can help in planning, developing and managing organizations. IS majors learn about application programming, systems analysis and design, database management, telecommunications networks and electronic business. They also learn management skills for working effectively with people in all areas including marketing, accounting, finance, production and personnel. IS majors develop communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills as well as information technology skills, all of which are highly valued in organizations of all kinds. The program also prepares students to apply for the Certified Computing Professional certification.

Why study information systems?

  • In demand. Six of the 12 fastest growing employment categories tracked by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are in IS. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, wwww.acinet.org.)
  • Well paid. The U.S. annual salary average for the entry-level IS professional with a bachelor’s degree is $47,000 to $53,000, and all IS jobs tracked by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are in the top earnings quartile.

Special department admission requirements

IS majors must be formally admitted to the College of Business before they can take most junior and senior level IS and business courses. Most IS majors are admitted at the end of their sophomore year. Check the university course catalogue for College of Business admission requirements.


High school preparation

  • Enroll in courses and/or participate in activities that develop your oral and written communication skills.
  • Be comfortable using a personal computer and have some knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and data management software.
  • Participate in activities that give you teamwork and leadership experiences. Participate in organizations and/or work experiences that let you learn how a business operates.
  • All students who enroll at UW-Eau Claire are required to have a minimum of 17 college preparatory units including:
    – 4 years of English (at least 3 composition and literature)
    – 2 years of a single foreign language
    – 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, 1 advanced college preparatory math)
    – 3 years of natural science
    – 3 years of social science (1 must be world or American history)
    – 2 additional units in the areas already mentioned or other academic areas

Freshman course work (sample first year)

Most students take 30 credits (15 credits each semester) their freshman year. Many IS students take the following courses during their first year:

  • IS 240, Information Systems in Business
  • Engl 110, English Composition
  • Econ 103, Principles of Microeconomics; Econ 104, Macroeconomics
  • Acct 201, Principles of Accounting I
  • Math 111, Short Course in Calculus
  • Psych 100, General Psychology; or Soc 101, Introduction to Sociology
  • Kins 186, Wellness Concepts and Health Related Fitness
  • General education electives
