Environmental Public Health

(Printable version)

Environmental health professionals have the important responsibility of protecting us from biological, chemical and physical hazards that exist in our human environment. These hazards may pertain to our food and water supply; to our ambient and indoor air quality; to the hazardous wastes we generate; to the health and safety problems in our workplace, home, or recreational facilities; and, particularly now, to our public health safety and protection regarding bioterrorism.

Why study environmental public health?

  • Gain the educational background that is necessary for employment in regulatory agencies, industries or consulting firms concerned with environmental quality and protection.
  • Play an important role in the reduction and elimination of environmental health hazards as well as preserving and improving environmental factors for optimum health, safety, comfort and well-being.
  • A person who holds a baccalaureate degree and who has completed one year of acceptable employment as a specialist in environmental health may become registered upon successful completion of the examination administered by the State Division of Health, or National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). This registration certifies a person's professional competency.
